I did believe we could sign Bonzi Wells in $6M/yr. But, his value will may be $8M/yr more. Can we make a sign-trade deal for this guy?
Like Clutch said, he is pulling a Jerome James performance in the playoffs to pull a big contract. And I don't really want the guy, he had a near-fight with T-Mac last season.
He might be playing for a contract. But imagine the rebounding and toughness advantage we would have with a Sura (Fingers Crossed), Wells Backcourt? He might not be a great shooting threat but could fit in as our third scorer. He will demand too much money and we dont have any tradeable assets that sacramento would want. Without taking back bad contracts.
I didn't see what Clutch said but I agree with it. You can't give a player a big contract based on one year's playoff performance. Bonzi is what he has been his whole career: A selfish uncoachable jerk. As soon as the ink is dry, he will turn back into a pumpkin.
Are you forgetting what Croshere did to the Pacers after his playoff performance? He never lived up to that contract. That's what teams end up getting when signing players to huge contracts after only 1 good year and a good playoff series.
The thing with Bonzi is this isnt his first time breaking out. hes been a very solid (understatement) player most of his career. Ive always considered him one of the most dangerous offensive guards in the league. This year he was sidelined a lot with injury, but one thing he provides instantly (if we could even get him) is toughness.
We'd be a better version of the Nuggets, with a lot of guys who want to go to the basket but no outside shooting. It wouldn't work. Lately Tmac's outside shot has been no better than Greg Buckner's, so we'd be in major trouble.
I agree with all your statements. However, if we are going to spend some money I say we go all out and pay someone who will provide less risk and more reward (a bona fide 3rd option if you may) Wells can be that on some nights but I'd say more often not than so. By that I mean sure Wells looks good right now but this guy is not only streaky in his performance but his behavior as well.
I've been pro-Bonzi as a Rocket for a long time. We need a SG who can get their own shot. Unfortunately, Wells is out of our price range. The Kings do have 3 SG's and it would be nice if they regarded Kevin Martin as the odd-man out. I'm not sure which Nuggets you're watching. The Nuggets are all about early transition offense. In the half court, the Clippers are doubling Carmelo and no one else can get their own shot. With the exception of Andre Miller occassionally posting up, the Nugs are a team of spot up shooters. Not saying they are good spot up shooters, but they are definitely not slashers or players who can get their own shots.
Bonzi would be a great addition probably. Risky yes, but bugger it lets take a risk nothing else is working of course he is not likely to be the sort of guy management would look at - or a guy that we could afford.
Ok, so we'd have more guys who can create their own shot. The point is, no team is going to do anything in the playoffs with such shaky outside shooting. Unless they play the nuggets.
IMO, you are missing two key points. First, the playoff Nuggets don't have anyone other than Melo who is a postup threat. Adding Wells (or a SG like him) to the Rockets adds this concept. Secondly, there is no discernable difference between Wells and what spotup shooters the playoff Nugs are surrounding Melo with...Andre Miller, DerMarr, Camby, Najera, Boykins...except that Wells is better than any of them in the half court and at finishing around the basket. I'm sorry but IMO your original statement that adding Wells to the Rockets makes them resemble the playoff Nuggets is just flat incorrect.
Here's why I like Bonsi: YEAR MPG FG% 3P% FT% RPG APG SPG PF PPG 05-06 32.4 .463 .222 .679 7.7 2.8 1.81 3.0 13.6 PLAYOFFS 2005-2006: Cumulative Playoff Statistics G GS MPG FG% 3P% FT% OFF DEF RPG APG SPG PPG 4 4 40.3 .586 .500 .600 5.0 7.3 12.3 1.3 1.00 21.0 A tall guard who can rebound the ball, score, and steps up instead of shrinking away in the playoffs is exactly what I'd like to see at the 2. Look at how his production went up (especially shooting %) in the playoffs when his minutes went from the season avg of 32.4 to 40.3 mpg. I know it's just the Nuggets, but he's averaging a double-double in the playoffs over 4 games, and almost averaged a double-double (ppg/rpg) for the season. Not bad for a guard! Also, it may be worth mentioning that at the age of 29, with 9 full years in the NBA, he should have as much mileage left in him as T-Mac likely does. Personally, if Bonzi can maintain that level of play and bring it to the Rockets, I'm all for that happening, but I'm afraid that his performance will increase his value beyond what we can afford.
As much as I would love to have Bonzi, I think he lacks one very important thing that you need from your SG....3 point shooting. It would be great to have a SG that rebounds and scores like he does, but if he can't hit some 3's to open it up for TMac and Yao, he's not much use to us. Be sure to check out his ft% too, 68%, not really what you want from your SG. We should get the idea of Bonzi out of our heads because there is no way we can afford him unless we can do a sign and trade, and seeing that we have nobobdy the Kings would want, I think we're out of luck. Someone else had mentioned it, and I totally agree, we need to go after Kevin Martin. He's cheaper, younger, smarter, and has put up great numbers when given playing time. Pugs
