Is there any possible chance for us to get Caron Butler? I know he mostly play the 3 - but I like his style. I think he would be great on the Rockets.

We should attempt to go for Josh Childress and JR Smith.

How about Jason Terry? I know he doesn't help our height problem - but he can score. He'll be a free agent this year.

    James Posey?

What about Bonzi Wells? This guy has been owning SA in the playoffs. Good shooter, rebounder. Free agent next year

I've been going back and forth on Bonzi for awhile now. He would bring alot of atttitude, fire, size and athletism. He's a great rebounder, a respectable shooter and has the ability create his own shot. On the other hand hes a bit of a risk, personality and chemistry wise. His ability to shoot the three consistently is also suspect and while he is a good defender against small forwards and guards who play in the post, can he keep the quicker guards out of the lane or chase them through screens. In other words can he adequately defend players like rip hamilton, JRichardson, Redd, Allen, JJohnson, Wade, kobe, etc.

I guess I'd be incline to take bonzi if he came to the rockets for a deal smaller than the MLE and for 3 years or less. Personally the shooting guard I really wanted for the Rockets that was both very attainable and affordable was signed by the suns last, Raja Bell.

That ain't happening. Bonzi is jacking up his value now. He won't even be signable for the MLE much less part of the MLE.

I look for SAC to re-sign him to a 4 year deal for around $30-35 million.

Yeah Bonzi is most likely gonna get something around and above the MLE and for 3-5 years but I doubt it will reach 4yr for 35 million - but more likely 4yr for anywhere between 26 - 30 million. I'd guess 4yr 28million and thats still comes out to 7million a year which is probably the biggest reason I'd pass on him.

As far as other possible FA wing players to I'd like to pursue is James Jones, Bobby Jackson, and though unlikely Jason Terry ( he'll get atleast 7mil per).

this is a hypo that i'm likely to get flamed for, but please be kind.

if we win a top 3 pick, would you rather:

    1) draft someone big-name, like thomas or gay or aldridge, and trade down for roy

    or

    2) trade the pick, head, and stro to milwaukee for michael redd. they're talking about blowing stuff up in milwaukee after getting ousted from the playoffs, and magloire might be gone as their starting PF. they'll be left with Bogut, Gadzuric, Ervin Johnson, Joe Smith, and Toni Kukoc for their PF and C spots. Kukoc and Ervin are now FAs, and Joe Smith & Magloire will be FAs next summer.

they have bona fide stars/starters at the 1, 2, 3, and 5, with TJ Ford, Redd, Bobby Simmons, and Bogut, and legit back-ups at the 1,2, & 5 with Charlie Bell, Mo Williams, and Gadzuric.

if they made the trade, they might look like this:

    1 - TJ Ford | Charlie Bell
    2 - Mo Williams | Luther Head
    3 - Bobby Simmons | Jiri Welsch
4 - Magloire [or the guy he's traded for] | Stro | Joe Smith
    5 - Bogut | Gadzuric
PLUS: the top 3 pick, which they will be able to use on either Tyrus Thomas, Adam Morrison, LaMarcus Aldridge, or Rudy Gay [or Brandon Roy]

they're losing star power, but getting really good, affordable, and long-term depth, not to mention a Top 3 Pick that could become the star of their team.

The Rockets lose our 4/5 backup, and our potential SG/PG of the future [but most likely backup/role player] - not to mention the pick that we earned from losing all this year.

But we gain starpower at a position we desperately need it at, and get an all-around hungry player that can take over, a GREAT shooter, and an all-around good guy all-in-one. we also gut most of the productive youth from our roster and put a virtual chokehold on our salary cap for the next 4-6 years [we'd be giving $55 mill+ to the 3 stars during the 2009/10 season]. but looking at the kinds of teams that have gone far into the playoffs, year-after-year, there's always a need for that 3rd weapon. Kobe-Shaq had a great coach and a great supporting cast that always came through when called upon [Rick Fox, Devean George, Derek Fisher, ROBERT HORRY]. SA had/has TD, Robinson, TP, & Manu. Detroit had/has Rip, Billups, Ben, Rasheed, Prince. Chicago had Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, a great coach, and a crappy supporting cast that somehow managed to fill-in. We had Hakeem, Clyde, and a great supporting cast [Kenny, OT, ROBERT HORRY, Mario (not Williams), Cassell, Chucky Brown].

To top it off, our 3 stars would be mature enough not to get selfish, and could amount to a kind of dynasty to seriously challenge SA.

if we spent the MLE on V-Span, we'd end up with:

    1 - Rafer | V-Span | Sura | JL3
    2 - Redd | DWes (vet min) | Bogans (yeah, i dunno)
    3 - TMac | RyBoCop | Draft Pick #32
    4 - Rubber Chucky | JuHow
    5 - Yao | Deke

milwaukee would have to make the conscious decision to trade its Main Star for 2 legit backups and a possible Star [to their liking, via the draft].
houston would have to make the conscious decision to win now [Redd] instead of later [Roy, possibly] when the window is closing. we'd also be left with an obscene void at the 4, and no bench. hopefully the 3 stars wouldn't need any help. and hopefully we can get some aging stars willing to take a serious paycut to chase a ring with our team.

i could see the Rox doing it. and i could see Milwaukee ROFL, as well as the whole BBS ROFL @ me.
but crazier things have happened. and both teams are about to undergo serious changes.

    WHAT WHAT.

What is the buyout on Span's contract? And if we were allowed to buy him out, are we stuck with offering him a rookie scale contract to preserve our MLE? If so, I can't see him signing a rookie scale deal, so it means we will have to break into the MLE anyways. Now, if we can buy him out without touching our MLE and then sign him for whatever without messing with the MLE that is very interesting.

The McGrady Redd deal just ain't happening. I wished Clutch would ban all trade suggestions and threads involving Yao and McGrady. None of them are going to happen.

do you think Milwaukee would bite, though, on the trade idea involving Redd & Head, Swift, and a Top 3 Pick?

yeah i was wondering the same thing about V-Span's contract, too. i think we have the option to sign him to a rookie scale contract; i have no authority for that assertion, however.

No, Redd is their foundation. And they are happy with him. They would only consider moving Redd for a LBJ type first rate superstar. It just ain't happening.

Really? Are they? You didn't make this up? They want to take apart their promising young team because they got beat by the Pistons?

You're hurting me with your lies.

I doubt the Bucks are blowing up anything. But I wonder if Bobby Simmons could be had. Simmons for Stro plus our 2nd rounder, or a future 1st.

Then again, he seemed to suck eggs during this Detroit series. So maybe we wouldn't even want him.

I think we'd have to jump at a deal like that. 42% 3 point shooter plus athletic defender. Sign me up.

Memphis is in the market for a rebounder, and they pick #24 in the draft, what if the Rockets trade the first round pick and jho for shane battier or mike miller and bobby jackson (f/a) or l.wright (f/a) or their #24 pick. If the rockets do get bobby jackson they should try to trade him for al jefferson from boston. Then use the mle to bring vspan ova and the rest to sign a PF.

If memphis aggres to take jho, will that clear up some cap?

No, don't worry about cap space. We won't have any in the next several years. Just forget about it.

    suck it, trebek. :D

the part that led me to my trade proposal:

Bogut made it clear he hopes to play a more central role with the team in his second professional season. He finished with 10 points and three rebounds in 32 minutes on Wednesday.

"It's disappointing, but I think there have to be some dramatic changes made next season," said Bogut, the No. 1 pick in the 2005 National Basketball Association draft. "It's all I can hope for, that there will be some changes and we'll see what happens.

"There are logjams at certain spots. Certain guys aren't playing that probably could play more. It's very tough, because we have a lot of great players coming off the bench.

"We just need to clean some things up. The core is obviously three or four guys, but we need to clean up those other role players. I wish I had played a more important role this year, but it didn't work out like that. Hopefully that's what is going to happen next year. I'll be unhappy if it doesn't.

true - this is Bogut saying this, not management.
i'm an honest person. WHAT WHAT.

Redd is their franchise player, true. but don't you think the intrigue of a Top 3 Pick, plus some affordable role players, would make them stop and think? Mo Williams has really had a coming-out party this year, and Luther himself is on the Rookie 2nd Team.
