Yao recovering well, management team saysReuters

BEIJING -- Yao Ming is recovering well from a broken foot and could be fit to play in the world championships in August, a spokesman for the player's management team said on Wednesday.

Zhang Mingji of "Team Yao" told the China Radio International Web site that the 7-foot-6 Houston Rockets center would start rehabilitation soon and could be training again in eight weeks.

"I believe there is still a possibility for Yao to participate in the world championships," Zhang said.

Yao broke his left foot in NBA action for the Rockets against the Jazz on April 11 and after surgery four days later, faced up to six months out of the game.

He would return to China in June, Zhang said, two months before the start of the world championships in Japan.

The Chinese Basketball Association confirmed on Wednesday that Yao's compatriot Yi Jianlian would not be joining him in the NBA -- in the short term at least -- after withdrawing from the 2006 draft.

The forward's team Guangdong Hongyuan informed the CBA of his decision, according to a Xinhua news agency report.

"It's not a good time for Yi to play in NBA," basketball administration vice president Hu Jiashi said.

Center Tang Zhengdong will, however, train with the Lakers this week and has a chance to impress scouts ahead of the draft.

The 22-year-old had been cleared by his Jiangsu Nangang club and the CBA to train with the Lakers for a week starting from April 27, the Beijing Morning Post said.

The Raptors were also interested in Tang, the paper said, and would organize a private training session for him in the same week.

Impressing his North American hosts will not be Tang's only obstacle to becoming an NBA player.

He must also obtain release from state basketball administrators, who have expressed concern about young players missing national team games while warming benches for NBA teams.

Predictable. If Yao is able to walk then he will push himself to play. Honourable but not wise.

It might be a good sign if Yao might be ready for the championships. That will at least tell us that Yao is ok, his foot injury will heal fine, and it will not damage his career.

But damn ready in 8 weeks? This guy must have wolverine healing powers.

Theres a thread about who Yao will be similar to, well he will be similar to Ivan Drago on the canvas if dork team yao tries to rush him back and train with the china nt team. It;s just a matter of time before Yao yanks off the electrocudes, smashes the heart monitors, grab the red jump suiting wearing shrimp manager by the neck and screams, "I fight for me, for me, for me!"

If that should happen, Yao will refuse to play for Rockets. Then you'll be happy.

Great news. Glad to hear he's mending well and will be able to play.

He has more than 8 weeks to heal. He's already had the surgery and the WC doesn't start until the end of July. That's over 3 months. He's only got 8 weeks to train with the Chinese NT.
