I dont think he is the answer to helping this team out. We need players that can run the floor , that have defense and offense. Mack is a great player, but he doesnt have defense and he cant run. I wont mind having him back , but the problem will not get fixed just because mack is here.
i thought Mack could run. I remember him having some great plays on the break last year. anyone remember that awesome 360 spin move he did on kobe that ended in a layup?? i sure as hell do.
I think he would help. His defense actually wasn't that bad last year. He hustled. He certainly hit the 3, and we have no one else hitting the 3s real good. His character in years prior to being a Grizzly was in question as far as working hard rather than just having a good time on easy street. I think he proved last year that he will work hard. But just in case, I wouldn't give him a real long contract - maybe that is the hold up all this time. A GOOD SOLID VETERAN BACK-UP POINT GUARD WOULD SOLVE MORE PROBLEMS IMHO.
Let me put it this way: Would you rather have Mack or Walt Williams at this point? If we do sign Mack, I hope that Anderson gets moved over to small forward and Mobley gets moved to the starting lineup. The problem I see with starting Mobley right now is that we don't have a shooting guard to come off the bench. Signing Mack would solve that. As far as running and defense, I don't think he'd do any worse than Walt, and that coming off the bench. He'd give us a guy who could hit the outside shot, play better defense than Walt (at both small forward and shooting guard), and run the floor decently. Mack isn't the final piece to the puzzle, but I think had we had him all season we might have at least a couple more wins than we do now.
I'm not sure Mack is really the answer. I think you would in essence be overpaying for something you won't need in the longrun. Mack is tolerable on defense and on the break, but there is really only one thing that he does well and that is shoot. Certainly, when you look at how bad Williams is playing, anyone would look good in his place, but my fear with Mack is that you would be getting just another Williams. As far as Mobley starting, I would caution against it. Mobley has become a black hole on the offensive end. That makes him naturally better with the second unit because you need instant offense. If he were starting he would simply take away opportunities from Shandon Anderson and Steve Francis. ------------------ Rockets When? Rockets When?
Sam would help the team, but you are right, he is not the missing ingredient. I think what he will bring is just another scorer. Walk has struggled, but I refuse to give up on this guy. The thing is, late in games when we have needed a three point shot until lately with Bull, we have had no one. Drew, Bull and the Wizard all are three point specialist, but Mack adds another dimension. Just like last year, when Scottie b****in struggled, Sam came in and gave us a huge lift. He was huge in the second part of the season, and was huge in the Laker series. I just think the addition of another player can not hurt, especially since we own his Bird rights. If nothing else, Walt and Shandon will have to bust their butt due to some comp.
Quite simply, Yes. Sam Mack is a better overall player at this point then Walt Williams. He plays better D, and he is a lot faster then the Wizard. I say sign him, I can't believe the Rockets are hesitating on giving him a 4 year deal. How many years did Price and Maloney get? DaDakota
Houston should give him a 3 year deal. He's not exactly young anymore, and I don't think he's the type of player that will age well. He couldn't be worse than Williams though, and I think his more athletic game would work better w/Houston. A small caveat: despite Price's injuries, I never regretted his contract. He gave 110% every night, didn't make too many mistakes, and was always a threat from 3 point range. His contract wasn't inflated badly either. He's not Steve Francis, but he's an excellent back up point, imo. Great character, as well.
I think Sam Mack should start at the 3 and "Wizard" should come off the bench. Hes not playing good enough to start as of late.
Sam Mack = Athletic? Hmmm, that's a new one. I think what we are seeing here is a little of the NFL backup syndrome. Unless you have a star at that position, the grass always seems to be greener on the other side of the fence. I think this is the case with Sam Mack too. People watch Walt Williams contribute very little and all of the sudden Mack becomes this awesome player. Believe me, I don't want to knock Mack, but there are a few things we have to consider first. 1. Even if Mack has been working out, he isn't in playing shape. Considering that he missed the training camp, preseason, and first fifteen games it will probably be the all-star break before he is 100% in the swing of things and that's if he signed right now. 2. If you give Mack what he wants (4 years) then you are giving someone a longterm deal for what amounts to be a band-aid. Let's be honest, how many people expect Walt Williams to be the starting small forward next season? I sure don't. By signing Mack, you are simply throwing money in a direction that the Rockets aren't going. ------------------ Rockets When? Rockets When?
The only person, until Dream comes back, that I think he could replace is Walt. No of our forwards-centers are expendable (Chuck-Cato-Thomas-T-Mass-Bullard-Hamilton) until we have more depth. Also Drew can't be touched, since we are already limited with backup PG. I guess bullard really shouldn't be in that group, but he is a hard nosed player who may be able to guard a PF for a short period of time. I can't imagine Walt doing that. So I think Mack won't help, because RT still seems to like Walt.
Mack can run and play D. To say he is the answer to all our hopes is wrong, but to say he can improve an undershooting team from below and above the arc is not. He can stretch a defense scheme that isn't stretching against now. My only beef is that they haven't signed him as yet and he will essentially be "cold" for a while before he can catch up. Sign him and sign him now!
We are consistantly getting outplayed at the 2 and the 3. Out outside shooting is pathetic, as is our free-throw shooting. Turnovers are high. Mack could help us in each and every one of those areas. End of story.
