http://news.yahoo.com/s/zd/20060421...4M9ojtBAF;_ylu=X3oDMTA5aHJvMDdwBHNlYwN5bmNhdA I thought I read that the two sides would reconsider this option shortly after the launch of the formats, but I guess that's out of the question now. BTW, I purposely misspelled the thread title to make it somewhat understandable (as opposed to "Matsu****a: Blu-ray...."). I hate posting news from this company.
Sometimes I don't understand what the HD-DVD folks are thinking. Their product is inferior, studio support is lacking, and the 800-lb gorilla known as the PS3, when it comes out, is gonna create one hell of a network effect for Blu-Ray. I imagine they're counting on early adopters and opinion leaders to carry the torch for HD-DVD, but most early adopters (including myself) are smart enough to hold off until the dust settles (or are at least scared of what the PS3 will do for Blu-Ray). So, who's really buying this thing? I understand that, at the beginning, HD-DVD did have more support than the opposition. I also understand the need to carry out the strategy and release products (I guess). But Team HD-DVD has gotta see the writing on the wall now. Every trade magazine and person I've talked to has already pronounced Blu-Ray the winner (or has at least called it superior). HD-DVD guys: Swallow your pride, make up with Sony, somehow, some way, and be done with it, already. You're not gonna survive the PS3 tidal wave, especially in the face of weak XBOX 360 support for your format. And a $500 player is not gonna induce a high adoption rate, given the format's dim future prospects (which anyone with a brain will consider before adopting a new technology that requires a strong network effect). This is all so tragic, really. Kind of reminds me of DVD-RAM, N-Gage, and Gizmondo (sorry, DaDa). Doomed before they even launched. Then again, if Blu-Ray can't get its product prices below the consumer adoption threshold level, both formats will go the way of other high-end standards, like SACD and DVD-A.
I really don't know what all of this crap is. Are current DVDs going to be obsolete? And if Blu Ray is going to charge $1000 for a DVD player and expect people to buy it then they are out of their collective minds.
At some point something will happen to cause one of them to go out of business, it is survival of the fittest.
yeah it makes you wonder how far tech multimedia can go. in my mind the best you could hope to attain would be virtual reality. games/movies in that would be pretty fun.
