Heath-- thanks for the research. I just thought somebody ought to say something... This draft is really a jumble. A bunch of good-looking players but no locks. The phone lines will be humming on Wednesday. ------------------ "How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak. Because someday you will have been all of these."
Thanks. A thought that came to me while doing this was that taking Richard Jefferson at 13 is to high for him as no one thinks he will go so high but Rockets fans. (And us Rockets fans is represented with Salsa's #13). Another thing I found is that we talk up the players/position we want, while other drafts have them lower. Of course we all can counter with such and such site sucks in their mocks, but the draft is really anybodys guess, and everyone seems to get surprised of quite a few picks when the real deal is done. I also noticed that most drafts agree on who will be in the top7, but not in what order. 7 of 10 had these guys in the top 7: Brown, Griffin, Battier, Curry, Chandler, White, Richarson. Sportingnews had Gasol in 6th with White (10) falling out of top 7. Draftsource had Gasol in 5th and Diop in 7th with White (9) and Chandler (11) falling out. Salsa had Gasol in 4th with Chandler (15) falling out. Btw this is Jefferson's numbers and the 10 drafts I have been using. If anyone wants to know averages of other players just ask as I got the full 1st round from all these. Richard Jefferson: Salsa 13 Sportingnews 14 ESPN 16 MSNBC 16 draftsource 16 SI 19 USA Today 19 NBADraft 20 Sportsline 20 Larry B 23 As all these are updated closer to the draft I will update the averages. I will also add Monter's draft, or any other bigger/more known site if anyone will point me in that direction. ------------------ The CC.net NBA Sim Board/Homepage
I think Brown, Griffin, Curry go in 1-2-3, in some order. It's 4 through 11 that all hell breaks loose, and those will totally depend upon who is doing the taking (or who they are being taken for). Rudy has got to covet that four spot, no matter which guy in that group he wants. The 4th pick is the only way to assure yourself of getting the guy you really want out of that bunch. Rudy also has a history of taking a guy at a pick higher than "conventional wisdom" dictates that player will be taken. I call it his "better safe than sorry" rule. I don't know who he picks, but I really feel he has targeted that #4 pick, and that we will get it. If we have the #4 pick, we do not have to take the player we actually want there, as long as we know we can deal for that player when he is taken. So, who do we take there at number four, or better still, who do we target to take if we get the four spot? I gotta go with Gasol, at least at 7:30 on this Saturday morning. Who do you think our target is if we move up to number four? ------------------ "We're having a pretty good time considering one day we're all going to die." Steve Martin, 1976
I think Brown, Griffin, Curry go in 1-2-3, in some order. My thoughts too. The only thing that can screw that up is Hawks taking Battier, which very well can happen. On the other hand, if Hawks wants Battier that bad they can trade down a few spots. Rudy also has a history of taking a guy at a pick higher than "conventional wisdom" dictates that player will be taken. I call it his "better safe than sorry" rule. True. Rockets will surprise, always do (and I kinda like the rule). I just hope that the surprise is not Jefferson if we stay at 13. So, who do we take there at number four, or better still, who do we target to take if we get the four spot? I gotta go with Gasol, at least at 7:30 on this Saturday morning. Who do you think our target is if we move up to number four? Gasol? 4 seems high for him, but as you say if we really want him, then better safe than sorry. I hope we go big if we get as high as #4, and although Gasol is big, or tall, he is not a center, or a POWER forward. He can play those positions and the 2 in europe, but he needs to bulk up some more muscles to play big in the NBA. If we go for a small forward you would guess Battier is a target for Rudy as he is a 4 year player. I don't know, but it for sure is exciting. ------------------ The CC.net NBA Sim Board/Homepage
___________________________ As you note, Gasol needs to get bigger and stronger, but he is young and can easily get more muscle. Bulk can be gained. Height can't. So I like him for that reason, too. He's got so many skills that are exceptional for his size and age. It is easy to see his long term potential being a blank check. (Maybe like Dirk Diggler) Admittedly 4 is high for him, but I could see us picking for someone else at number 4, then swapping with number 5 or 6, who would take Gasol. Then we pick up a later pick or a future pick out of that deal. We have to assume that getting the number 4 pick would cost us picks and talent, so getting another pick as part of a swap would be huge in this draft. I think when the dust settles, Mr. Gasol will be sporting a Rockets' cap, and we'll see it within 30 minutes of his selection. ------------------ "We're having a pretty good time considering one day we're all going to die." If we get to 4 (and manage to keep #23) which pair would you rather have. Don't say Dolly Parton's either! A. Diop and TRock B. Battier and Alvin Jones/Ken Johnson I'm a Duke fan and former season ticket holder, but even I have to go with Diop/Morris. I feel bad, though! ------------------ "How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak. Because someday you will have been all of these."
Thank you sir, may I have another? I could see us trading up to the 4 pick, then cutting a deal with 5 or 6, so we get Gasol plus a later pick, which we would use in conjunction with our 23rd pick to get Alvin and Trock. But in your scenario, I pick Diop and TRock. ------------------ The world is divided into two groups of people: Those who try to divide everyone into two groups, and those who don't.
I could live happily with Gasol, Jones, and TRock. I would miss Battier, though and bypassing Diop or Curry could turn into a monumental mistake down the road. Doesn't Gasol (Gas Rocket) have to go Top 5 to execute his buyout? To be truthful, I want 3 new young athletes on the Rocket squad. I'm not really for doing a 3 for one trade. I think we need the bodies: youthful or not. ------------------ "How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak. Yeah, I think you're right, although I thought the number was 6. Still, you know if he comes here he is going to get some endorsement deals for Europe that will be killer, and I'm betting Mattress Mac will step up too. ------------------ The world is divided into two groups of people: Those who try to divide everyone into two groups, and those who don't.
With new updates there is also new averages. I have also added 3 mocks (monter, InsideHoops and bskball) The top players and their averages: (The second number is included bskball as they had a very special mock. I also list the old average) 1. Kvame Brown 1.25/1.31 (2,20) (High: #1 - 9 times, Low: #2 - 4 times) Kwame is rising and is staring to sound like a consencus #1 pick. 2. Shane Battier 3,08/3,08 (3,90) (High: #3 - 12 times, Low: #4) Everybody seems to think Battier will go as #3, and that gives him the 2nd best average. 3. Eddie Curry 3,25/3,08 (3,40) (High: #1 - 2 times, Low: #6 (MSNBC)) Most have Curry going as #2 or #4, while 2 have him going #1 (Draftsource and bskball). 4. Eddie Griffin 3,83/3,85 (2,50) (High: #1 - 2 times, Low: #5 - 7 times) Griffin is falling fast, but 2 still have him for the top pick (Sportingnews/USA Today). Most expect him to go at #5. 5. Tyson Chandler 4,67/5,23 (5,90) (High: #2 - 4 times, Low: #9/12) Chandler is again climbing the boards after being rumoured to drop. 6. Rodney White 6,25/6,23 (5,80) (High: #4 - 2 times, Low: #10) White falls some as no-one really believes he can go as #1 anymore. 7. Jason Richardson 6,75/6,62 (6,60) (High: #5, Low: #8) Most have Richardson going 6th (4) or 7th (7) but bskball have him at #5, while NBADraft has him at #8. 8. Pau Gasol 8,50/8,62 (8,30) (High: #6 - 3 times, Low #10 - 7 times) Gasol will go as #6, #8 or #10 is what the mocks thinks. His stock is staying put around an 8.5 average. Most believe that he can fall to 10 so Boston gets their man without trading. 9. Joe Johnson 8,83/9,46 (8,80) (High: #8 - 6 times, Low: #17) Johnson will go at 8 or 9 is the belief of almost every mock. The only 2 that does not have him here is Sportline (13) and bskball (17). 10. DeSagana Diop 10,67/10,38 (10,50) (High: #4, Low: #14) CNNSI moved Diop up to 4, but most (5) have him slipping down to Seattle at 12. 11. Troy Murphy 12,67/12,54 (High: #9 - 2 times, Low: #21) Murphy has moved into the lottery on my average list as his stock has been rising lately. (He was #14/14,40) Most thinks he will go at #10/11 to Boston. 12. Vladimir Radmanovic 14,25/13,77 (High: #8, Low: #22) Radman is also cracking into the lottery at the average list. (He was #15/16,70) Most think Houston at #13 is his destined new home. 13. Loren Woods 14,83/14,85 (12,20) (High: #9 - 3 times, Low: #25) Woods is falling like a stone on some mocks. ESPN moved him down to #25 (from 18) while others also moved him down a few spots. But Larry B, USA Today and MSNBC still have him going at #9 to Detroit. Other averages: 14. Brendan Haywood 15,33/14,85 15. Jamaal Tinsley 15,83/16,23 16. Zack Randalph 16,83/17,08 17. Kedrick Brown 17,17/17,31 18. Richard Jefferson 17,42/18,08 19. Michael Bradley 18,33/18,00 20. Stephen Hunter 18,92/18,46 ------------------ The CC.net NBA Sim Board/Homepage [This message has been edited by Heath2000 (edited June 26, 2001).]
