If there is a Tmac or Amare type of player, then you can pick him with a top three pick.

Look, those lousy top 3 picks did work out not because teams had higher picks, but because they had bad judgements. Given your scouting skill, good or bad, you ALWAYS do better with a higher pick.

Give a fool $1 mil he will be broke in several years, but give a smart guy a few grands he will turn it to $1 mil in a few years. But neither of the two would do better with a few grands than $1 mil. Understand now?

Agreed. But is it the difference between $1 mil and a few grand or $1 mil and $900k? Discounting the Top 3 picks, how big a deal is 2-3 spots in this particular quality level draft?

    Yonkers:

Aside from the talent level, there is also fitness level among players. Let's assume the difference in talent level from 6-9 is minimal, the 3 players chosen ahead of the 9th spot, each with a set of work ethic, playing position, strengths and weaknesses etc... have different level of fitness to a team. What if the fittest player gets selected by opponents? Isn't that a loss? Also, winning that extra game cuts our chances on getting a top 3 pick by half. It cuts into our chances greatly of making steals from possible draftees whose stock fall on draft night. Not to mention, if the teams with better records than us hit the jackpot by getting a top 3 pick, our draft position would be further bumped down . Like what happened to the rest when Houston drafted Yao. Last, it cuts into our advantage if we want to trade our picks.

If fitness level isn't important, we might as well assemble a team consisted of Marbury, Francis, Bonzi Wells and Allen Iverson. All good talents but definitely bound to clash. Oh wait, that team is already half done.

Denver didn't try to win by resting their starters and we tried our best lineup to win it. Talk about shooting oneself in the feet.

The bottomline is we take more risks with nothing to gain, so basically it's dumb. Fans being upset about the win is not just about draft order, but also, about the mind boggling dumbness. The results of the draft are waiting to be played out, I'd reserve judgement without basing it on some simple talent evaluation.

It's not just the rain that can upset people, but also dark clouds looming over the head, especially when the dark cloud is made by oneself.

Sorry I forgot a question. If a team with the 9th pick want to trade that pick for your 6th pick, what would you want beside the 9th pick? To simply swap the 6th pick and the 9th pick is dumb IMO, so what do you want beside the 9th pick? I'm curious to the answer because the additional asset you want would be the loss from the win in Denver.

yOU GIVE YOURSELFTHE BEST OPPORTUNITY, to pick players, then it is your choice, you control your own destiny, not have to be affected by who those in front of you take. Actually the rules change, and the winning play is to not win games, it isn`t losing its winning by not winning games! Pride like jvg, is stupid, its like a better boxer slugging it out at close range just to be macho, and show his toughness, when his best strategy is to box from outside! Jvg wins the battle, but loses the war!!!!

if we end up trading our 1st and 2nd rnders in order to move up and take Roy, then you could theoretically say that the win against denver ended up being worth a bench player of some kind (assuming we'd get someoen who'd stick on the roster for a year or 2 minimum at pick 32)

What you need to remember is that the win against Denver ruined our chance to get lucky in the 6th SPOT. If we did have the sixth spot our chances of getting the 2nd. or 3rd. pick in the lottery would haver increased dramatically.
If you want proof of this possiblity then keep an eye on Minny and Boston.I presented this senario last week and it could have worked out for us except for JVG and his stupidity. Our only hope is that LUCKY # 9 helps the Management to avoid another blunder!!!

Boy, I hope you don't use this logic when negotiating your next job....

If I have the choice between 900K and 1 Mil, I take the 1 Mil and don't look back. Is it a huge deal ? Nah, not really. But if there's 7% chance that that 1Mil turns into 10Mil, but only a 3% chance that 900K turns into 10 Mil....Then I DEFINATELY take the 1 Mil....

As for the young'un thing, yeah, I honestly wish we could have seen Lampe play significant minutes in the last couple of games. That way, we have a better idea of how he reacts to game situations, and if he is worth keeping around for the future. Same with Head, but to a lesser extent. We've seen him with lots of minutes, so its less significant for him. But, how does he do in meaningless games with big minutes? Does he still give 100% the whole time? We'll never know...

Personally, it just gauls me that Jeff Van Gundy can not only not win right, but also he can not lose right either. He is just, really, a dumb_ass. Other coaches seemed to have no problem figuring out how to tank.

Losing was preferable. Right, even. Tanking stinks to high Hell and I cannot cry over that missed loss (unless Georgie did, in fact, pull a 'slow' one).

its not too bad, i hope we win our tie breaker over GS thou...

    1. LaMarcus Aldridge
    2. Tyrus Thomas
    3. Rudy Gay
    4. Adam Morrison
    5. Brandon Roy
    6. Andrea Bargnani
    7. Shelden Williams
    8. Rodney Carney

We will pick whoever is left in these players. I really don't like adam morrison, but he is probably going to be a top 5 pick.

The rockets have never been good in drafts..besides Yao Ming.......That year we had 3 first round picks we didn't draft Rashard Lewis and he was begging to be a Rocket....rmemever that...I expect more of the same with this draft...They have always screwed up the draft..with this draft having so many questionable players, I don't expect the Rockets to get it right....alot of that fault goes on Rudy T, Alexander and Dawson....

That was in 1997 for cryin out loud. What about Kenny Thomas? Luther Head? No team has successful drafts every year. We have clearcut needs this year and actual position to grab basically whoever we want. Someone should fall out of our projected top 7 or 8. It happens every year. Players rise, players fall. We'll get someone good this year. Bank on it.

Xiki, you will have to take a moment and explain to me the difference between losing on purpose and tanking. How can losing on purpose be right and tanking stink? And while you are at it explain why keeping 2 of your best starters on the bench for the whole 4th Qtr is not pulling a 'slow' one (whatever that is). Knowing the consequences and not 'losing right' is not good for the franchise, is it?

Funny you mention Kenny Thomas....Did we keep him? NO...I admit he was gone but we didn't make the right decision by trading him away...What did we give him a way for...do you even remember? When have we ever made a draft pick where we picked out a rough (if thats how you spell it)...Everybody knew Yao was goig to be good so that doesnt count...why can't we scout good prospect in later picks who develop into stars like other teams...ie. Chris Paul, Dwayne Wade, Tony Parker, etc....although they aren't 30th or 40th picks, those players weren't top 5 picks either form what I can remember...Why can't we ever find players like that.....
You also mentioned Luther Head...are you kidding me? I admit Head is a good player but he will never be a star...He will be a good back up and thats about it...he turns over the ball too much and doesn't have a consistent shot...
You might not rmember but we had some horrible draft picks..i can't even remember some of their picks for god's sake..I think we picked Zan Tabak in the first 15 picks of the first round..what the hell is that all about?..didin't we also draft Bostjan Nachbar too.....we always get stuck with these tall, slow white players....Ryan Bowen (eevn though we didn't draft him)...the decisions have been horrible on this Team....we gave up Derrick Anderson this year for a guy we cut a few days later just to free up some money..Anderson was a better option that what we had...Also, what were we missing this year?..shooting of course...why the hell did we cut Barry when that was his forte..i would rather have Barry with one bad leg shooting that HGead, Bogans, and Alston jacking up 3 pointers all day long....anyways, i'm hoping they can make some better decsions starting with the draft..hopefullly this boy genius Morey has some better tricks up his sleeve...i think its time for Dawson to go....

LOL I dont know what that 1million dollar analogy is suppose to accurately represent nor do I know what it is you are trying to make me understand. Exactly what is it from my post do you think I am not "understanding."
A simple reading of my post will reveal that it is just a fun look at some of the possible outcomes of the draft. Understand?

LOL I'm not sure if you are seriously trying to argue with all the facetious but very possible scenario's in my post. Are you saying none of my scenario's arent possible?

Anyways lets deal with what you wrote... if there is a Tmac or Amare type player in this draft they would be drafted anywhere from early to late lottery picks in the draft. You do realize Amare and Tmac were both taken with the 9th pick dont you and not one of the top 3 let alone top8 picks in their draft RIGHT? Why? Because Tmac and Amare were both unproven, raw, straight from HighSchool, undeveloped projects who were chosen based primary on "POTENTIAL." Some young players with great talent and potential develop immediately like Amare, some develop later on thier second team, Like Jermaine Oneal and Tmac and some dont really develop at all, like Bender, Kwame Brown and Darko, though both still have time to get better. Others develop but never reach the expectations of their pick, like Chandler, Curry, Swift and countless other examples.

Are these all examples of bad scouting jobs? Bad research? The answer for the most part, IS an EMPHATIC NO! They are the result of CHANCE and LUCK which like it or not PLAY a bigger role in the outcome and development of draft picks than the matter of a couple positions in the draft order. There are no universal indicators teams can use to determine whether prospect will develop to their potential or not, there are no indicators which can be applied to every prospect to show who will continue to grow and improve in the NBA while others dont. SO NO you are WRONG, you DO NOT always do better with a higher draft pick. Thats probably the dumbest statement I read in this thread. A quick review of history will show numerous examples why that statement is false. MMMMkay? Understand?

That is the dumbest statement I read in this thread and other threads. Should we start a poll to see people's opinion?

Just because you see some team got a good player at #9 and another team got a bad player at #3, you are gonna kid yourself into believing it is better off having the #9 instead the #3? What a fool!

LOl where did I say it was better to have the number 9 instead of the 3! Indeed whoever made that assertion is a fool, hmm iwonder who I'm quoting here....?

This is what I said since you cant seem to read, despite quoting me directly lol.
if you think that is the same as saying a high pick is better than a low pick... you need some reading comprehension classes.

If you still think this quote is relevant to the debate, you need some reading comprehension. Look, this thread has got to this long because you and a few others still cannot grasp the irrelevancy of WHICH PLAYER WILL BE PICKED with a certain draft pick to the VALUE of that pick in your hand.

Let's go through this once again. The value of a $100 bill in your hand is $100. What you will buy with that $100 has nothing to do with that value.
