http://www.euroleague.net/noticia.jsp?temporada=E05&jornada=22&id=855 Looks like V-Span is playing pretty well in the Euroleague tournament. I dont have NBA TV, but some of Panathinaikos' games apparently are being shown. Those that have NBA TV might want to check them out. From those that have seen him, apparently he is really attacking the basket. Really driving the lane. That's probably why his FG% is so high. We sure could use that production on the Rockets. Hopefully they will bring him over this summer!
Right now the only player we have that actually attacks the basket rather than settle for jumpers is Tmac. Even Alston tends to stay around the perimeter (even tho he has a terrible shot). He's a big guard and can handle the ball. It would be nice to see if he can keep up with other SG's in the NBA. I know a lot of ppl want him to be a PG, but I don't really see that happening. As far as this draft goes, should we take into account that V-Span might contribute next year? If so, I think we should try and pick up a PG in the draft. Alston is a good back up and Sura I think has seen the best of his days pass him by, so we definitly need someone who has good size and can hit an open 3.
i hear "attack the basket, 70% FG percentage" and i think tony parker. and as much as i hate tony parker, i'd love to have a guard like him on the rockets. fast, quick, and aggressive to the hoop. he's a shoe-in for our summer league, right?
Hmm, if this guy can play point, and if he's big enough to guard 2's, then him and Luther could have a good thing working together. Luther can guard PG's, and shoot. Hopefully this guy can set up the offense, drive to the basket, and guard shooting guards.
I been readin alot about V-Span on this board and I was wondering how come he has not come down yet? If we drafted him then how come we do not know when he is going to come down and play for us? (It might be a stupid question to alot of you all but I honestly have no clue why) Thnx
Not necessarily. It depends on what his Euroleague contract says at least in part. If the buyout is too expensive or if he can make more money in europe, he may just stay over there.
I believe his buy-out with his current team is $400K. So we can easily do it. And perhaps use half the MLE money to sign him.
He's got some size and his tendency is to penetrate rather than take the outside jumper, probably because his outside jumper isn't that great. Never saw him dunk so I don't know if he can, also he is definitely not as fast as Tony Parker, seems about as fast as Nacioni of the Bulls to me, reason I mention Nacioni was that the Bulls wanted to switch him to defending other teams PFs because he couldn't keep NBA SFs in front of him. Span might have the same problem with NBA PGs and the speed of the game. CD definitely needs to make a decision on the guy and find out if he wants to sign for next year before the draft.
V-Span seems to be improving. He seems like a combo of Manu and Parker. It is nice to know that we finally developed someone from the draft ala the Spurs. The Spurs have been doing this for years and we should continue doing this shipping players overseas. I think dipping in the MLE would would be worth it considering the lack of SG/PG quality in Free Agency.
Spanoulis isn't a SG, especially not for NBA. he gets some 'SG' minutes here in Europe, but in those minutes he's paired in backcourt with PG that isn't really a PG (6-1 shooter). he's really good at penetrating & kicking the ball outside but bear in mind that this is European bball and that in the NBA he'll be facing more athletic players. great thing is that he draws a lot of fouls. what i don't like about him is his off-the-ball game, he really seems lost sometimes... and his assist/TO ratio has always been around 1, which isn't something you'd expect from a guard. other than that, he knows to draw the charge on D (thanks to his quick feet) but isn't some spectacular defender. he can hit open 3, but i'm not sure he has NBA 3-point range right now. he'll need to work on that.
I could have sworn that CD said that VSpan WILL be here next year. Anyone else remember him saying this?
Thank you High5 for this insight into Spanoulis. I wonder if the Rockets will make the effort to bring him over as part of the general team makeover?
Correct me if I am wrong. I don't think we need to use any of the cap exceptions to sign him. He is a rookie. We have his right. We can sign him under the rookie scale. Buying him out is extra money Les needs to pay. It doesn't count against the cap. Am I right?
I think you are right. The problem is whether that rookie contract is good enough to lure him here, because it seems that he is having a nice version and might get multi-million contract after his current contract expires (after next season?), especially taking into account the depreciation of dollars against euro.
