Phil in front, with Tiger, Vijay, and Goosen all within three shots. Els within four. This is the best major I've seen in some time in terms of all the great players truly having a chance to win going into the final round. I certainly have a strong bias to Mickelson and want him to win, but it's going to be a great afternoon of golf regardless. Terrific leaderboard.
Oh, I like Freddie, I was just listing the big five because they're the most notable and I can't remember a previous major where they've all been in contention heading into the final round. Fred has a legit chance. I'm always skeptical of the underdogs (going into Sunday) when they have one great round to go with a couple of average ones, but Fred has been consistent all week around par and slightly better. The course is going to dry out as the day progresses and only get tougher. It almost has a U.S. Open type feel to it in that par on any hole is a great score. Fred may not drive it like Phil and Tiger, but he (and almost any of these guys) can keep it accurate and safe, and if he puts together pars he'll be there at the end. I'll be very surprised if the winning score is higher than -5.
I hear ya - I feel the same way. In order of preference, my hopefuls are Goosen, Singh, Couples, Woods, anyone else other than Mickelson, and then Mickelson.
Yes, I hate that fake loser Go Fred a former member of the 16 time national champion Houston Cougars!
Tiger has missed three putts on the right lip in the first 8 holes. He's going to have to go really low on the back nine to have a chance.
Barring a pretty serious choke job, this is Mickleson's tournament. How many putts has Tiger lipped out today? At least 5.
Beautiful golf today from Mickelson, and even better class in how he and Couples handled their competition with each other. Congratulations to Phil - three-time major champion, two-time Masters champion, back-to-back major champion and halfway to the grand slam. It was truly a superb round of golf with the pressure of a star-studded leaderboard behind him.
Although I am very disappointed, I'll give credit where credit is due. Mickelson played the best round of golf in his life and he deserved to win. It was a fun tournament to watch and look forward to the next major event. Now, maybe Phil will go out and get a dang haircut.
OK, yeah congrats Phil. That article on what the other golfers call him still cracks me up...FIGJAM..too funny.
He just exudes an air that I find obnoxious. I mean hate is a strong word but I'll say that I dislike him. It is similar to the dislike I have for the Duke basketball team, the Jazz, the Yankees, etc. Besides it is good, I think, to have that one entity you don't like to root against. It makes watching the events that more fun, IMO.
the only thing I don't like about phil is that fake perma-smile. but anyway, the same thing that happens to the top name golfers when tiger is leading, happened to tiger yesterday. tiger had been winning all last year with him not hitting his his tee-shots straight, but making up for it with his short game. yesterday he was straight off the tee. I thought he was gonna dominate but he is the one who caught the yips on the greens. the next test for tiger is can he comeback with the leader of a tournament playing well like yesterday. he has comeback when leaders have faltered, and we know he can lead boat race a tournament.
i wanted to ask this same question, there was some article in here before about the most hated athletes and i think phil was one of them. there are lots of people that hate him but he seems alright to me, but i don't watch a lot of golf.............
