Some might consider this a stupid question What makes someone eligible for the draft.. Mainly this is towards foreign players that have played foreign basketball like Yao was or Badiane.. why cant a college guy just quite college and sign a contract what exactly are the rules.. thanks guys
I think for American players that you have to be one year removed from your HS graduating class or be 19 years of age to be draft eligible. I have no idea on the foreign regs...
Basically the rules are: 1. First rule is that you have to go through the draft process. That doesn't mean that you will get drafted, or even be on the NBA's radar, but you need to at least be avaliable in a draft before you play in the league. 2. You can declare and put yourselves in the draft if you are 1 year removed from high school and 19. Or just 19 if you are an international player. 3. If you are an international player and turn 22 in the year of the draft, or if you are an american player that's at least 22 and don't have any NCAA eligibility left, then you are automatically eligible for the draft that year. You don't have to declare or anything. If you don't get picked, then you are a free agent and can sign with any team. A guy can quit college, but he still has to go into the draft process. If he doesn't get drafted, then he can sign with anybody, if anybody wants him.
