i think you're missing the point. they bashed themselves in the episode. just because they don't come out and say it doesn't mean they're not doing it. it's like making chef join the fruity little super adventure club, everyone knows they're just making fun of scientology. they were doing the same thing with the family guy refrences to themselves.
The Family Guy stuff was definitely a two edged blade. Yes they directly ripped the show (it was on the money and I like Family Guy), but they were also ripping themselves in the process. But the FG thing is getting in the way of what may be the main point of the show: that Comedy Central punked out. This was about the whole Scientology thing.
Catch me up, Did Comedy Central pull the Scientology show? Also I watched the show last night, agree that it was spot on FG ("It reminds me of that time I got a job as a carrot cake...") but the last 10 minutes of the show weren't funny. Is there some frame of reference, ie do Trey & Matt hate FG, that I have missed? Some of the show seemed like they liked it, some that the thought it sucked. Both true. Maybe. maybe no.
As Antisonic pointed out, Family Guy relies heavily on 'proper context'. They don't use current events much, but pop-culture references are its bread and butter. A lot of its randomness is centered on that. Meanwhile, South Park uses both...so it's hard to criticize SP for it. Personally, I find FG more enjoyable than SP. But that hardly means SP is 'done'. I'm also one of those folks who feels the show just gets stronger as it goes along (so far).
I agree with cartman with this one. I just dont get family guy. Im not saying its a bad show and i know alot of my friends like it. I just cant get into it the way i get into south park
And people were laughing at me calling Sout Parh "extremely intellectual." This thread is a great example of why the show is in fact, extremely intellectual. You can watch the episodes twice, and still catch things that you did not get before. Little jokes and jabs and hints at mockery and satire. That's the great part about it. Like I said in my original post (and other people have pointed out), the genius behind this one episode in particular is that, not only were they making fun of Family Guy, they were taking an even larger stab at their own show, and just cartoons in general. They were poking fun of cartoons, belittling the toilet humor, and simplicity of them, yes, and even of their own shown. Nut then again, lying inside of that simple humor, is something with a complexity that the average kid or whatever will not understand. That opens the show up to an even larger crowd, including educated adults, which is what I would consider most of the people here. It is only because of all of this reasoning that we are having our discussion. Thus, genius!
I thought it was hilarious. The chase scene was great and the guy sacrificing himself to be the last to bury his head.
I personally loved the episode. I watch both shows, Southpark for it's satire and because it usually has a great point of view on certain events (Passion of the Jew is an example). Family Guy is just randomly funny and makes me laugh, even if what SP said about it is entirely true. The only thing that I can think of when you compare the two shows is that Family Guy has gotten worse the longer it has been on while I've enjoyed SP more in the later seasons.
Exactly. I don't get all this argument about Family Guy vs. South Park. To me, this episode was primarily another hard jab at Scientology. The Family Guy stuff was merely a vehicle towards that. The thing about burying their heads in the sand was great. And I agree with whoever it was earlier that said this episode was smart but not especially funny. I enjoyed it, but I really didn't laugh out loud all that much. The big wheels chase got a good hard laugh, but overall I was just chuckling to myself and thinking, "Oh yeah, they're making fun of themselves about the Catholic episode, and the handycapped kid fight episode, and the all the Jew jokes." And that's fine. I'll still watch the show. It would be great if all it was was the social commentary stuff with none of the low brow jokes thrown in...but I can't say I don't laugh extra hard when the dead people **** themselves.
bump part 2 of cartoon wars is tonight http://www.southparkstudios.com/dow...ext_week.mov&vid_name=Next Week on South Park
Comedy Central wouldn't let them show it ... Ten seconds later, Jesus was shown crapping on human beings...literally. I think Parker and Stone were able to show the hypocrisy of the situation and to articulate why they feel capitulating to terrorists is wrong.
man, thats not what i was expecting from the episode... part 1 seemed like they were ripping on comedy central for not allowing them to trash scientology. this was more of a rip on everyone who trembles in fear to terrorists.
I thought both episodes were boring. They had a few funny moments, but eh. The chef episode has been the only episode this season that hasn't been boring.
Just saw tonites episode and thought it was hilarious. They poked fun at themselves and Family Guy, as well as every other thing imaginable. I love both of these shows equally and they both bring their own sense of humor which I enjoy. Its just funny that we're actually arguing about episodes of cartoons
The best part about tonight's episode was them addressing people's issue with them taking each show to far to prove a point.
I cracked up at the slap-fight between Kyle and Cartman. I also liked the dig at themselves about being self righteous and forgetting to be funny.
