I think Carr is ready to turn things around, it was probably hard for him to take anything serious knowing that his leader was Dum Capers.
In defense of Carr, how much tape do you need to view in order to hand it off on first and second down and then throw a quick out/slant/hitch route on third down (if you're not running for your life or getting squashed like a bug)?!? In the one game where he was able to call the plays in the first half, he looked great. When Pendry took over the play calling we were flat and unimaginative. That alone tells me that Carr puts in the work. However, he was severly handcuffed by our super-conservative play calling and/or offensive strategy.
The super-conservative play calling was probably a result of failed attempts at a passing game. It's not just about the play calling, it's about reading the defenses and being on the same page as your linemen.
I am not sure why Capers is taking so much heat. He was good the first 3 seasons. Capers is a coach who stresses a disruptive defense, conservative offense and limited mistakes. He has always coached the same, keep the game close and be in a position to win in the 4th qtr. Strong defense, effective running game and a passing game that exploits the run efficiency. Good special teams and take-aways. Capers always coached this way. He is who he was. What hurt this team from the Cleveland debacle in '04 through last season was giving up by some players, disagreement among players and coaches (see Carr vs. Walker) and bad personnel moves. If Capers is to be faulted it would have to be that he didn't get rid of some of the lazy players and deal with the dissention strongly enough. At least from what we know looking from the outside. Babin was hurt (but he is not an impact player) Faggins was a joke and our front 7 could not stop the run. We had only one legitimate receiver in AJ and we didn't throw his way. Our running game was avg. The right side of the OL was sad. It is hard to play ball control when you have a poor OL and only one receiving threat. The best thing for the Texans is happening right now- an influx of better talent. You can't win in the NFL drafting scrubs.
I think Kubiak could make a huge impact for Carr in this area. Our previous coaching didn't know squat about reading defenses and calling an audible. If they did, then the audibles might have been something besides a running play.
McNair mentioned at a press conference that the team should have put more pressure on Carr to perform and work harder. He said that they are expecting harder work from him in the future. It was the press conference when they announced the Capers firing.
Carr's play hasnt been as positive as i would want..but i def admire the fact that he hasnt complained or whined about him getting sacked i mean the guy gets knocked down more than anyone and has the least amount of time in the nfl to set back and pass but he still gets up and still plays he might not vocally be a leader but you have to acknowledge this aspect of his play
name me 5 great QB's who watched game film. what, not even 1? I thought as much... the great ones never do.
i've got several confidential sources in the pentagon. my apologies for not being able to provide them at this time.
that's a cop out. you watch as much tape as you can, be prepared. My big beef with Carr has always been that he does not eat and breathe football. I don't want the leader of the football team to be a family man. He should be obsessed with football. Kubaik has recently said that he has asked David Carr to make major sacrifices, to "pay the price." I think that translates to Kubiak saying to Carr - If you want to be my qb, you better be at the office watching tape here with me and otherwise prepare HERE, without distractions, with total focus, for 12 to 14 hours a day. You get paid millions. In exchange, we own your ass and you better perform. The old regime didn't demand the best of Carr. And before anyone complains, this is the standard in any demanding job. You want to be an investment banker, you pay the price and put in massive time at the office. You want to be a high profile, big firm litigator? pay the price, put in the time.
Not to downplay Marino or anything, but how many Super Bowl rings did that get him. But it's not like David Carr is Marino anyways. He is a QB that has been sacked more times in his young career more than any other player in history. Carr and his OL were always a step behind, they never once seemed like they were anywhere near the same page. Hopefully Kubiak will turn things around for Carr and I'm pretty confident he will. But it's just a little annoying knowing that this guy didn't do all he could to help the team while everyone was making excuses for him.
