Going off memory, I believe we had the 5th worst record in the league that year and lucked out with the #1 pick (good thing too - #2 was jay williams, #3 mike dunleavy, #4 drew gooden, #5 tskiti... of course Amare went 9th that year, but no one had him projected as a top 5 pick... i think nbadraft.net had him going at #13 and i was hoping that he'd slip to #15 so we could take both yao and him instead of boki, try to solve our problems at both the 5 and the 4... could you imagine that now?? both yao and amare (alongside steve and cuttino at the least, if not t-mac assuming the trade still went down)?? no amare, but one nice karl malone memory -- i'll take it)
