Actually, he had exactly 6 points in each of his previous two games (and single digits in 7 of the previous 13 including a goosegg), so I doubt you were watching him either. Drew Gooden syndrome. Has an okay average, but it's like playing craps if he shows up to play or not. Two hot games, three embarassments. Repeat. If he can develop some consistency, he'll be a player. But that was the knock on him in college, too. -edit- Charlie's averages for 14 March games, including the 48 point game: 13 and 8. 19 and 10? Did you just make that up or not bother to double-check?
I was talking about his sophomore season at UConn. He started slow but carried the team into the tournament, but was labeled as selfish and lazy during the draft.
This is pretty much all true. His consistency and defense are the only things holding him back from being an all-star, in my opinion. It's also important to note that Charlie is the 4th option on offense and will rarely if ever have a play run for him. A lot of his baskets are on offensive putbacks or shots that are jacked up late in the shot clock. If more of the offense went through him, he'd have far better numbers.
The mistake wasn't drafting him. The mistake was drafting him so high. They could've traded down and likely still got him, but who really knows for sure.
How does anyone know they could've traded down and drafted him? The Lakers picked 10th and many people said they would've picked him. If they traded down a few spots what could they get, a future second rounder maybe? It's not the NFL draft where there's tons of depth, if you see someone you like you pick him.
I said probably, and that there was no way for sure. You don't think people won't give up a lot to trade up if they see someone they want? Seems to me that New Jersey made out pretty good trading the number 7 pick (Eddie Griffin) to Houston for three first-rounders(Richard Jefferson, Brandon Armstrong, and Jason Collins).
Definitely. Charlie was one of the hottest movers in the draft prior to draft night. There were rumors that he wouldn't last past the 9 spot with Golden State. The problem is that everybody looks at the mock drafts all over the internet and takes them as gospel. When time and time again, we've seen that mock drafts are completely unreliable. Nobody really knows which GM actually wants which player until their name is called by David Stern.
Charlie Villanueva really surprsied me. At first - when I saw the box score - I thought it mgiht have been a mistake. A rookie to score 48 pts?! That's pretty amazing. I know many of people have done that before - but not recently. Charile Villanueva must have been on fire that day. Sometime people get hot - I guess. In the All star rookie game... it seemed like Charlie and Luther really clicked.
Apt? No. Noah joes not have a long range shot. That factor easily voids that comparism. More like "in spite of".
