Paul Krugman chimes in on the Immigration debate - specifically on the issue of depressed wages, which I, as a liberal, see as the best non-racist, non-paranoid argument against Illegal Immigration and, to a lesser extent, the Guest Worker Program. This is especially considering the diminishing power and influence of organized labor (weren't all those costly UAW health & pension benefits already a de-facto compromise in exchange for less-frequent wage increases?). This is from the NYTimes website, but it's in the subscription-based "Times Select" section:

Once again Krugman proves that he's a complete joke. He b!tches about illegal immigration, yet doesn't have the stones to take a stand and provide a solution. Sounds a lot like a true liberal to me! b!tch, b!tch, b!tch, yet providing no solutions. How easy!

Doing something just for the sake of doing something is far more stupid than doing nothing, if it doesn't solve the problem it's intended to solve.

Seeing as that I lean more to the left then texx, I like Krugman. On this story though he says this is bad, this is bad and this is bad. Then at the end he says we need to do something. What does he want us to do? The only thing he concludes with is that he wants Congress to fail to do anything this year. I guess he wants the status quo then, unless that doesn't work out. The immigration issue on the U.S. southern border is a minefield of different issues and perspectives.

Who knows what we might get out Congress this year. I am reminded of a Wonder Years epsidoe where the parents are picking out tile or something like that. The father picks a color he likes, the mother picks a color she likes and they end up buying a color that nobody would like (puke green).

Somehow I get the feeling this is going to be the number one b!tch topic for 2006. Should be a nice distraction from the civil war in Iraq.

I think what Krugman is saying is that whatever route our nation decides to take on this matter, compromises like what Bush and his business buddies are pushing should not be taken because it'll only exacerbate the problem without solving anything.

If unskilled labor is being pushed to the forefront, there should be programs enacted to train these unskilled Americans to higher career paths....something like an economical intermediary before community college. After all, isn't English the largest barrier that these illegals can't overcome to becoming full productive citizens?

For illegals, an amnesty provision would be the initial step towards further integration. Though I'm not sure there would be political patience or goodwill to see it through....
