My dog is missing. She's been gone since about 8:15PM on Friday. I spent about 3.5 hours looking for her. I've never had a dog go missing before. What do I do next? I'm going to put some signs up in the neighborhood right now, but other than that should I contact the dog shelters and dog clinics around Houston? How many dog shelters are there in Houston? Is it better to fax a picture of the dog to the shelter, to see if somebody brought it in? Thanks.
Try calling the animal shelter and giving a very detailed description as well as the SPCA. Flyers around the neighborhood work, thats how my neighbor got his dog back. I know this sounds like a stupid question, but does your dog have their collar on and tag with your contact information? Good luck and I hope you find your dog safe and sound.
Check with the City of Houston BARC - animal control. Check with and inform the SPCA, Humane Society, CAPS, Special Pals and the Homeless Pet Placement League. Also, any vets in the area should be notified. Give good descriptions and give photos. Go to Kinkos and get color scans of photos or run digital images through their machine to print out flyers. Take those to all the shelters and hang them around the neighborhood and include convenience and grocery stores, post offices and the like. If you offer a reward, you are more likely of getting a response - I've seen stats that say something getting a response is like 50 percent more likely. You don't have to offer a lot, just something. Give out a number you can be reached at 24/7 - cell phone by the bed preferably - as you don't know when an animal shelter or other place will call. Oh, leave food and water outside any door accessible (i.e. no fence) to the dog. Sometimes, dogs will return home and wait at the door, but they are more likely to do so if there is food there - canned stuff, in particular because of the smell. --- Good time to mention that animals should have tags - rabies and ID. Both can track them back to the owner, vet or both. Also, pets can get implants. Almost all shelters and animal control departments have scanners to check the tags. Good luck!!!
Yea put up flyers, drive around and ask people if they've seen the dog, and go places that the dog is familiar with. My dog has gotten away multiple times, mostly because i'm stupid enough to leave the door or fence door open for hours. However, he's pretty consistent about only going to places that he's familiar with. Call the SPCA and any other local shelters and give them descriptions etc..
Place an ad in the paper, too, and offer a reward. I once actually had a dog STOLEN. People go around basically kidnapping dogs and then waiting for someone to offer a reward and then SURPRISE they found your dog and of course you can't PROVE they took it, even though there's literally no way the dog could have escaped and traveled all the way across town. We had to pay a couple bills to get the doggy back but it's a small (infuriating) price to pay.
Thanks for the help. Hopefully I'll find it. As stupid as this may sound, my dog was all I had left really. I don't have any family. My friends and gf, well ehh. I'm just going to be crushed if I don't find her. What are the general odds of finding a dog, after its gone missing for a few hours or even 24 hours? Its never been missing before for this long a time.
I lost a dog last year. We think the meter reader accidentally let one out. I was worried because she's 15 years old and deaf. I posted signs with photos and a description everywhere in my area. I drove around and handed flyers out to people I saw walking their dogs. My dog didn't have her collar or tags on. The next day, I got a call from a woman who played with my dog while she was loose. Later that evening, as my mother was posting signs, my dog was waiting at the mailbox she checks mail at. She wasn't hungry or thirsty, we think someone in the neighborhood took her in one night and housed her. Then let her out the next day to see where she would go. So I think there's a good chance you'll get your dog back. She's just out taking a vacation
Keep an eye on these websites as well too. www.petharbor.com www.cap4pets.org I'm still searching for my Max. it's become pretty bleak but I have faith the boy will bust out of whatever home he is at and come back home. They can't keep that psycho dog locked up forever. Good luck finding your dog. It's such a gutwrenching feeling. Post some pictures if you can. I'm always looking at those websites each night to see if there are any new additions. I'll keep an eye out for your dog as well.
Damn dude, sorry to hear it. I hope you and Mr. Brightside are reunited with your mates. I had never understood the appeal of dogs...until we rescued Henry from the SPCA. Sure, it's annoying when the only thing he tears up is our remote or when he got pissed at my wife last night and pissed on our bedroom door, but I can't imagine life without the fella. Good luck, guys.
damn man i realy hope u find him... i dont know what else i can tell u what to do since every body has realy said every thing but i wish u the best of luck in finding your dog... it realy sucks whne your pet runs away but i hope he or she will come back... Good Luck Man
Also put fliers up at the pet stores (patsmart, petco, mom&pop...) and all the animal clinics in your area. They usually have a bulletin board stet up for this kind of thing. Good luck
Like posted above, call all the shelters you can. Post signs everywhere you can as well. We found my gf's dog at a shelter after someone had turned him in.
Was it you that posted a thread a few months ago about losing your dog? I had wondered how that turned out. Good luck to you and Mr. Brightside. I can't imagine losing my little buddies.
Good news update. My dog came casually strolling back to my place about 48 hrs after it had left. It was sitting near my garage, when I came back home. She had some nicks and bruises, I think from walking through the forest which is in my backyard. But otherwise it seems fine. I'm so happy right now. I gave it a good beating, for running away. (jk) Thanks for everyone's good wishes and help. I'm going to be a whole lot more careful now, a full ID and maybe even a satellite chip. After seeing those dogs on those sites you mentioned, I may adopt a few more pets.
