I pass Chachos everyday on the way to work, I've heard they have good breakfast. Maybe one of these days I'll actually leave early enough that I have time to stop there.

It CLOSED. I hate to be the bearer of bad news. It was my favorite place too. They tried to upscale the place a few years back and drove away the clientele. It kills me to drive by it now.

El Tiempo is good, but I liked it better when it was on I-10. The new location isn't as nice IMO.

    Wow. I didn't know that. I ate countless 3am burritos there throughout the early '90s. :D :(

I want to add that La Tapatia is my favorite "downtown" texmex. The shrimp tacos rock.

Here's one for the old timers in the Clear Lake area (long since closed):

Eberado's, on Nasa Rd. 1 in El Lago, right next to the Ship's Wheel club. They had the nastiest food, but they were open past 2 am, and would serve you a "special tea"

Anyone know what a special tea is?

Tough call. I like certain dishes at many different restaurants. I'd probably have to pick El Tiempo.....though in the same paragraph, I'd probably tell you that it isn't Tex-mex (which it really isn't, you're bound to be disappointed if you order cruncy tacos and cheese enchiladas there; and although their beans and rice are certainly good, they aren't typical Tex-mex). Those of you who think Lupe Tortilla has better fajitas though......wow........I guess I live on another planet. Doesn't Lupe Tortilla use machine tenderized skirt steak? They did the few times I ate there, and that just reeks of no skill to me. Well marinated and well trimmed of the membrane skirt steak that has been grilled over real wood coals and then served in a table sized hibachi with real mesquite coals to keep it warm...........only El tiempo does that (that I know of), and nobody beats them there. And their homemade corn tortillas, beef short ribs and spicy grilled quail make them the restaurant of choice for me when I think of Mexican food with a "Tex" flair.

There is no place better for transvestite waitresses and disgusting Mexican food that you would not eat unless your blood alcohol content was >.2%

There is no better Tex Mex in Houston than at Teotihuacan, on Airline (the original), Irvington, and the newest, #3 on West Bellfort near Fondren.

The Tex Mex food you get at Teotihuacan cannot be beat for the modest price, and their menu is huge. Their seafood dishes are incredible.

I wish I was. I owe a huge chunk of my youth to that place. Between that and Astroworld, all my old haunts are closing. Next, they'll close East Beach in Galveston!

There is a place called Juanita's just off of 610 N at TC Jester that has become my replacement, that is pretty good (food but no music). The cloud of grease meets you at the door and they have those awesome key lime candies when you leave. Did I mention it was next to a strip club?
