I keep seeing questions about what we owe and what is owed to us in future drafts. As I've said a number of times already, I think it would be great to have a page that published this information as a resource, much like davo's salary page. I'm not in a position to do that right now (maybe in September), so I'll do the next best thing and publish it here. I did a little preliminary research and this is what I've found:

    Picks Owed to the Rockets:

    1. Milwaukee Pick: A first round pick acquired 6/28/00 along with #15 of the 2000 draft (Collier) for our 2000 draft pick, #9 (Przybilla). The pick must be Milwaukee's and conferred in the next draft. However, it is top-10 protected until 2007.

    2. Orlando Pick: A first round pick acquired 8/27/99 along with Don MacLean with a bunch of crap we got from Vancouver in the Francis trade. According to an old clutchcity article, Orlando has until "2003 or 04" to give it up. I'll try to find out which for sure later. It is not lottery-protected but does not have to be their own pick.

    3. Detroit Pick: A first round pick acquired via Philadelphia on 1/21/99 for Mirsad Turkcan. Clutch reported at the time that it was due by 2003, but more recently has said 2004. I'll try to find an independent source for the date. It is not lottery-protected but it does not have to be Detroit's own pick.

    Picks the Rockets Owe:

    1. Dallas: We owe Dallas our second round pick in 2001. We traded it 6/28/00 along with our #38 that day (Najera) for the #31 that day (Langhi).

    2. Vancouver: We owe Vancouver a first round pick by 2002. It is not lottery protected but does not have to be our own pick. We surrendered the pick on 8/27/99 in our trade for Steve Francis.

I have links for all these things, but I'll spare you unless you request them. If you take exception to any assertions here, please tell me and I'll look into it.

    JV,

Thx, I have heard different things about the Detroit pick about it having and not having to be theirs. I have searched through articles on the stackhouse and Ratliff trade, but got little info on the pick.

    JuanValdez,

    Is this what you wanted?
When you get something more definite on the due dates, I will update it.

Turcan was traded to Philly for a future 1st and that was assigned to a pick that Detroit owed Philly. That puts Philly out of the picture and just leaves Detroit and Houston to conclude the deal with the conveyance of a 1st round pick.

The Detroit pick is NOT top 10 protected and is due 2001 or 2002. Could be a windfall if they can't quickly recover from losing Grant Hill and it looks like Rose is staying in Indy. Tough for Pistons - Great for the new Rocks! I believe the pick owed to Vancouver is one that can NOT be conveyed. Anyone know for sure?

Mango, Thanks! This is great! I will see if I can clear up the ambiguous stuff. In the meantime, however, I'd suggest you put 2001 instead of 2007 in the Due Date on Milwaukee and put "Top Ten Protected Until 2007" (though I'm not sure if it is protected through 2007 or up to). Mil must give us their pick if it is not top 10 next year.

Also -- sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine -- it is "Turkcan" not "Turcan".

If Detroit loses Hill, which it seems like they will, Detroit should finish in the lottery. That probably means a top 10 pick. Detroit could be inclined to give us that pick in 2001 because they might not want to risk being forced to give us the #1 in 2002 because they could end up like San Antonio did the year they got Duncan #1, and be forced to forfeit the pick.

Are we guaranteed Detroit's actual pick? More than likely if it is a top 10 pick then Detroit could trade the pick to a team at the bottom of the draft and a future pick.

I guess my point is, are we guaranteed Detroit's pick or a 1st round pick from Detroit?

Beck-No they wouldn't if they got a top 10 pick, they could easily improve their team, and then get out of the lottery.

And they don't owe the pick till 2004, not 2002.

This is great news! Put 2 and 2 together. Here's the buried headline: If we end up in the lottery or close to it next year, and if the Bucks do well and end up with a pick in the 20's, we can take the Bucks' pick and send it to Vancouver to close our debt from the Francis trade -- thereby protecting our lottery pick.

Bottom line: The Collier trade helps us bigtime, even if the Bucks' pick next year isn't worth much.

    Will,

Suppose the Bucks are the 21st pick in 2001, so it belongs to Houston. Perhaps there is a team at pick #26 that wants to move up and they have an early 2nd round pick that they would toss in if the Rockets will flip the #21 and the #26. The Rockets say sure and send the #26 to the Griz and end up with an extra second round pick that will help make up for the one they owe to Dallas for the Langhi-Najera trade in 2000.

    JuanValdez,

Changes made as per your suggestions.

Mango, I'd email you if I could, but I can't so I guess I'll continue the conversation here.

Can the web-page be left up? I mean, it's not in the way or costing something or anything like that?

I'm still working on confirming things. Can you believe my boss has been giving me work to do?

I wanted to dip into the Chronicle archives but they only give free access to subscribers. I'm not one, of course, because I live in Chicago. Can I borrow a subscriber number and a zip code from someone? I promise to forget it when I'm done (which shouldn't be hard since I'm moving soon).

No one will lend me a subscriber number? That's ok. However, I'm tapped out of ideas on getting more information on the draft picks. I'll leave the page as is for now.
