for the star that was here (francis), i think jvg was a better coach. proof's in the playoff pudding. ironically, though, the player he acquired for the knucklehead, imo, is better suited for rudy. tmac's a rudy type player.
45 regular season wins. (no Yao Ming, SF3 at full strength) 43 regular season wins. (Tomjanovich not present down stretch, YM rookie) 45 regular season wins. (Horrible end-of season and backing into playoffs) Seems to me everything they gained in Yao Ming going from a rookie to second-year player was lost by playing Mr. Van Gundy's game.
There IS something called a "lay-off". happens when things go south in a company and they need to get rid of some extra weight. (Van Gundy) Also, CEO's are used as scapegoats all the time. (if we wouldve made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs, then i wouldve been impressed.) i dont like Van Gundy. He hasnt impressed me. Fire his arse.
with tmac and yao we have a good inside out game, could be one of the best in the game.....(assuming healthy) but in order to be a contender we need to get people that can make shots.....tmacs health has nothing to do with bogans, alston, head...etc missing wide open shots
You have made your points, and I respect that. However, unfortunately, I see serious bias on Asian fans from your post. You based your conclusion that Chinese young fans were mostly against JVG solely on a Chinese TV host's comments in his show. So, Chinese fans are basically immature and ignorant, so to speak. This is absurd!!! A simple question to you: How many local Chinese fans do you think would come to this bbs to post against JVG in English? and How many non-Chinese posted against JVG here? As mature as you think you are, you don't need a rocket scientist's head to figure out the answers, I suppose. So, next time you step up for someone, not necessarily just for JVG, either state the facts or just make yourself loud. Please do not write bias all over your face ...
You did a very nice job in your earlier post. Yet, your post sounds like "JVG HAS had enough time to prove himself NOTHING". a little confused by what you really meant ... maybe a small piece of conclusion in your next long post
My bad, it should be 5th. I did get the record correct. Western Conference Team W L Pct GB +---------------------------+---+---+------+------+ Phoenix Suns******** 62 20 .756 - San Antonio Spurs**** 59 23 .720 3.0 Dallas Mavericks****** 58 24 .707 4.0 Seattle Supersonics*** 52 30 .634 10.0 Houston Rockets***** 51 31 .622 11.0
i'll take that bet (only if Van Gundy is still our coach). I think it's possible that we can be no. 5 but not very likely. FIRE VAN GUNDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've tried to stay away from the whole 'Fire JVG threads' but after lurking through this one I'd have to say that I wouldn't be too sad to see him go. There are things that I like about JVG: - holding his players and himself accountable when they make mistakes. - recognizes hustle and encourages it from the superstar down to the scrub. - believes in a team concept. But there are things I don't like about JVG that really piss me off and make me miss the good ol' Rudy T days: - constantly b****ing about how bad the team performed, theres calling out your players for a lackluster effort and theres taking it too far when you don't have your best talent out there and continuing to call them and their performance weak. - the pessimistic attitude he always seems to have, I mean there is glass half full, but JVG seems to have a black hole for a glass. There hasn't been much to be positive about this season but the guy just brings me down listening to him, I can't imagine what the players feel like. - likes to put in Ryan Bowen at the wrong times (sorry I had to get this in) With all that said I'd still give him another chance as the team was decimated by injuries. Hopefully we can get a decent player who can contribute right away in the draft (no project players), get Vassilis Spanoulis from overseas and get some good role players this offseason and make a run next season.
Uh..I guess I have to repeat what he said to you again. Almost any coach in the NBA can coach a team with a healthy T-Mac and Yao to the playoffs.
My two cents. The older Chinese folks who are more knowledgable about basketball and have been following the NBA for a long time are generally not able to post in English on the internet. Unless you can read the Chinese bbs, you won't be able to see their opinions and evaluate their basketball knowledge. I am not really familiar with the education system there but my guess is that they don't teach English there except in the universities. And from what I have read before not that many people there go to universities especially in the older days. Yes I am generalizing here. But I think it's true.
What are you arguing about? Van Gundy took us to the playoffs, well maybe T-Mac and Yao did, but nevertheless we got there. It was the entire teams fault, coach included, that we lost. I think we'd be a good team had we been healthy all season. JVG's style may not be pretty, but it gets the job done. For an example, see last season's RELATIVELY HEALTHY Rockets.
Thank you, Tracy! I hope I'm the one getting that early birthday! Yay! I'll survive if I'm getting my hopes up for nothing. Till then, I dance in the clouds of joy knowing "Tmac himself" let me know JVG is getting the guillotine .
Oh man. If this is true then this season was TOTALLY WORTH IT! Please let it be true. Good Riddance Gundy. And take Juwan with you wherever you go. Please!
daoshi, u brought up some good points, but JVG should not be given a free pass because of the injuries. Not at all. An average coach can win 50 wins and get to the playoffs with lots of talent. But a good to excellent coach will get the most out of his team even with injuries. Of course, I am not saying I expect us to make the playoffs this year, but I definitely dont think we should be something like 3-20 in games that TMAC does not suit up. That alone to me is unexpectable! The JVG supporters claim that he is an excellent coach when he has a healthy team. Ok, look at his best stretch as a head coach for the Rockets: last year, 29-11 at the end, right? Now look at that lineup: TMAC playin like an MVP, a great Yao, healthy Sura as a leader, a Wesley who could actually play D and hit shots, John Barry doing his thing, Howard doing his thing, Mike James playing like a mini Sam Cassel at stretches.......... Now tell me, how many coaches would not go 29-11 with that lineup? I bet you at least 2/3 of the coaches in the NBA would have.......and to top it off, we still lost in the 7th game by 40! JVG got outcoached against Dallas, plain and simple. And dont blame it on the Juwon Howard injury, we had a 7 game winning streak and a 2 game winning streak in the playoffs without him. We were playing great, until Dallas' coaching staff made adjusments.......JVG got outcoached by a rookie.......his marks for losing in the first round with that much talent: Average to above average..... Now lets look at great to excellent coaches: Indiana, last year with the suspensions still got in the playoffs somehow and made the second round ....... this year again with Oneil out stayed close to .500 and will make the playoffs...... Utah, always close to playing .500 ball, even w/o Kirilinko sometimes.........Dallas has had no Josh Howard for weeks folks, still competing for the best record in the NBA.....the Suns w/o Amare......WOW!......u get the point. What defines a coach is how he deals with adversity, and JVG gets an F for this year for going 3-20 w/o TMAC.... And you cant tell me that all we have is scrubs......whose fault is that? DA was cut by JVG......J. Barry was cut by JVG....last time I checked they were both decent shooters.....Padgett was not signed while Bowen was last time I checked he could shoot......and most curious of all, Chuck Hayes warms the bench for some reason beyond my understanding.....last time I checked, all he does is rebound, steal, and finish really well around the basket......I just dont get it...... JVG is an average coach, who can only coach when he has lots of talent, and lots of smart, healthy, veterans who understand his system......but then, what coach wouldnt win given that? but give him a few injuries and adversity, and he is done.......
