jj is nice, but he has too many liabilites. i really like the guy, and i wouldnt be too upset if the rockets drafted him, but he does have some major holes. first, he isnt very fast and that doesnt go well in the nba today. if you look at the nba, most of the elite teams have speed at all positions. second, jj doesnt have the size to play sg either, guys like stackhouse and ginobli would abuse him. if jj is the best player left when its the rockets to turn to pick, i have no problem with them drafting him, but if there is a legit pf still on the board no way would i take jj. as much as we need some shooters, we also need some size. our backcourt is loaded with players 6-3 and under.
Well, that`s part of the problem with the NBA, and why the uros are so popular these days. We will pick JJ, you heardit here first. pluck JVG, he can`t even win a game in his division. He will be fired along with the retirement of CD. I hope they look outside the organization!
i think even if CD retires JVG gets the pass this season. I'm watching reddick now, he doesn't move like Rip without the ball, and his defense is horrendous.
I don't see it as a problem that there is no place in a winning teams' backcourt for undersized players who lack athleticism. Should the NBA just get rid of all the players in the league who would abuse Redick (pretty much every perimeter starter)? Everytime I've seen Redick play against teams that have players with NBA size and athleticism (not necessarily skills) he's struggled: Memphis, G'Town (when Bowman was on him) and now LSU.
jj didnt look too impressive against some athletic defenders, and that was my biggest concern regarding jj.
Looks like Redick will be there when the Rox pick. His 3/18 tonight and his lack of speed and athletic ability pretty much dropped him at least 5 places in the draft. I thought if he could show a non-stop motor like Rip, he could have weaved through the floor and come off of screens to get better looks but he didn't have the motor to do that. Rox should pass on this kid, he will be a one dimensional player in the NBA.
its funny, at the beginning of the year everyone was clamoring for daniel gibson. i don't think he'll come out, but if he were to come out, the rox would be too high to pick him, i never would have thought that would happen. either way, the dream pick is rodney carney, and in the second round, i'd like to see denham brown from conneticut be the guy. he's 6' 5'', can shoot the rock, just doens't have that explosive athleticism, but he knows how to put the ball in the hole. he'd be a great second rounder.
Please no Reddick. This guy will not be a great NBA player, he might be a good off the bench scoring option and nothing more. He is a one dimentional player that might give us a couple three pointers only to allow his defensive assignment to burn us for 20 points a night and 10 fouls spread amongst our bigs because of all the penetration that his man will be doing. Sheldon Williams will be a solid player.
lol i dont liek the hobbit (hinrich) but the only players safe on the rockets is yao and tmac and head....wesely can come back for the min....i dunno what the hell yall see in lampie or whatever his name is....bogans is a good BENCH player....we need to get a back up PG a starting SG and they need to shoot....there are some good gaurds in the draft, swift will prolly be better where he can learn the offense and stuff(he is a lil slow) and if Sura is done he needs to leave...cuz if he cant be ready by the preseason then we need to get rid of him some how
yeah, that was a poor performance by duke tonight...they played their worst game of the season by far, and they played stupid and without much passion. And I have never seen jj look that bad....i agree he probably lost a lot of money and will be a 15 and on pick after that performance....but you can`t judge a guy by one game so we will see how he works out at the camps...but he wouldn`t have to fight that hard for his shot with the rockets....more like a matt bullard...but yes that made me doubt his nba potential as well....but I want to be rational...remember michael jordan was held in check against Indiana by a slow white guy who dogged him all over the court in mj`s junior year in the ncaa, and they lost to an average indiana team. The problem i have with s williams is he is undersized in height, and i think some of the problems will be exposed in the nba being a short powerforward reatively speaking as now the new breed is atleast a solid 6,9 -6,11. but you guys are right if this game is the sole basis for any draft analysis of his abilities. But Yao, and many other players have had games where they just look terrible. Remember, how bad vince young looked against a&m, and was totally outplayed by the other player`s first start (or close to it). H ELOOKED LIKE AN ALL-AMERICAN RUNNING QUARTERBACK...AND VINCE LOOKED LIKE HE DEFINATELY NEEDED TO WORK ON HIS reads and passing skills....i don`t think vince will throw as good as he did in the rose bowl, but he obviously wasn`t as bad as he looked against A& M. Hopefully, that`s the case with reddick, he just had a really bad game....and duke did not run any solid ofensive sets, coack K needs to spend less time doing commercials and more time working with an offense...they had no court spacing...melch...should have been on the court....to spread the floor, as even when jj droke it was all clogged up for him, williams, roberts. Make some adjustments, go backdoor...they relied on that stupid reggie milller run around screen crap...that wasn`t working....and lsu studied the tapes and duke was too predictable...lsu knew there plays so well they were going to where the place was going to end up. I think they sleepwalked through the whole game, and didn`t put up much of a fight, lsu missed so many free-throws, you have to play smarter and beat this team...lsu is not that good....that`s why they play te game b/c sometimes the better team doesn`t always win, i.e., uh in 83
Top 10 power forwards in the NBA: 1. Duncan-7' (can't be defensed by anybody, only a team, and only containment) 2. Garnett-7' (see above) 3. Nowitzki 7' (not a classic post up PF....smaller, quicker defenders do best on him) 4. Amare 6'9" (average size, great athleticism...gets most of his offense off the playmaking of Nash, average post up ability) 5. Brand-6'8" tops with long arms (I think Shelden is taller than he is). But ferocious heart makes him a great rebounder, scorer, and shot blocker, even though he is "short". 6. Bosh-6'10ish (mobile PF with good floor skills, very mediocre post up skills, does not carry enough girth to post up consistently). 7. Marion-6'8" tops (perimeter player who gets points off the long ball and slashes to the hoop, uses his quickness and activity to mismatch against bigger, slower power forwards) 8. Gasol-6'11" (beanpole, mostly a jumpshooter with occasional trapses through the paint, opponents would prefer him to post up instead of face the basket from 15 feet, occupy him under the basket defensively and bang him around and you negate his defensive presence.) 9. Zach Randolph-6'9" roly poly (has decent strength and leverage, prefers the turn around jumper from 17 feet as opposed to playing in the paint) 10. Jermaine-6'11" (really a true power forward with tremendous back to the basket game, he's a handful to defend, even for players of the ilk of of Duncan and Garnett) 11. Odom-6'9" (a long, lean face up player who puts the ball on the floor, he is at his worst posting up, and is at a disadvantage posting up against guys his size or bigger, not a big PF) 12. CWebb-6'9" (over the hill crafty, smart PF, injuries have left him mainly as a face up player with the deadly jumper from 17 feet all the way out to 3 point land, only goes to the paint for garbage or when he has a severe size advantage) 13. Rashweed-6'11" (has great all around game and is tough to defend when he posts up but he likes the perimeter and too often settles for the long jumpers instead of bulling his way into the paint and posting up. will take smaller defenders to the paint, will force bigger, slower defenders to have to play him on the outside) 14. Ben-6'9" max (no offense to defend really save finding him to keep him away from the garbage can.) No.s 3 thru 14 in no particular order. Points: PFs in this league come in all shapes and sizes. Just because they are tall, long, and lean doesn't mean they will be successful. Just because they are shorter doesn't mean they will be unsuccessful. Shelden's size is very reasonable for a PF in the NBA. Shelden's athleticism and strength is very reasonable for a PF in the NBA today. Shelden would be a significant upgrade defensively IMMEDIATELY upon setting foot on the court over any player that has played the PF for us the last 3 years. If we get that 3rd scorer at the SG spot, then we really need a Shelden type to help us dominate the glass and intimidate defensively so our big perimeter scorers can get easy baskets off transition. Everybody is worried about things like height and size when they should be mostly concerned about heart and intelligence.
Nice jopatmc. Sheldon has a 7' wingspan as does Brand. The long arms are how he gets so many blocks, people don't expect him to be able to get to some of the shots that he does. Two more things about Sheldon that should be considered are that he gets all those blocks without getting into foul trouble and he is a solid FT shooter. Sheldon isn't flashy and I doubt he falls to us but he would be a solid pick.
The Rockets are going to have really tank the remaining games to get Sheldon Williams, he is one of the few players that could help this team right away. He would be perfect for the rockets. I like Williams and Randy Foye alot.
Actually Brand's wingspan is 7'4" corrections: Amare is 6'10" Marion only plays PF in the suns system, he's a small forward. if he's a 4 then amare is a 5. Odom is a 6'10" small forward. Webber is 6'10" with awesome wingspan.
I thought Sheldon is projected to be a mid-range 1st rounder (in the 15-17 range)? At least the mock drafts I have seen so far, have him listed that low.
Sheldon will go in the middle lottery, from about 7-13 range. which is right where we should be picking. Denham Brown from UConn in the second round, on that team thats talent laden he barely gets a chance but is averaging 15ppg during the first round of the Tourney. That would be a pair of seniors from top college programs, players with the chance to come in and contribute right away.
Only problem with this pick (or someone probably better like Tyrus Thomas) is will Van Gundy pick somebody that should start over Howard. He has been on record stating his love affair for him & Bowen because of their effort. I personally think Howard is untradable since he has a few years left on his contract and is not exactly the PF teams are looking for. Only way to dump him would be to include him in another deal (like trading swift or something?).
