I can see the rationale behind this, at least the Muslims believe in God. I guess Hindus rate higher then most because they believe in mulitple gods.

    Atheist

Atheism, in its broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of gods. This definition includes both those who assert that there are no gods, and those who make no claim about whether gods exist or not. Narrower definitions, however, often only qualify those who assert there are no gods as atheists, labelling the others as agnostics or simply non-theists.

Although atheists often share common concerns regarding empirical evidence and the scientific method of investigation and a large number are skeptics, there is no single ideology that all atheists share. Additionally, there are certain individuals whose religious or spiritual beliefs some might describe as atheistic, though those holding such beliefs do not normally describe themselves as atheists.

Atheism includes, but is not equivalent to, the position of antitheism, the active opposition to theism.

    Agnositc

Agnosticism is the philosophical view that the truth or falsity of certain claims—particularly theological claims regarding the existence of God or gods—is unknown, unknowable, or incoherent. Some agnostics infer from this that these claims are irrelevant to life.

The term and the related agnostic were coined by Thomas Henry Huxley in 1869, and are also used to describe those who are unconvinced or noncommittal about the existence of deities as well as other matters of religion. The word agnostic comes from the Greek a (without) and gnosis (knowledge). Agnosticism, focusing on what can be known, is an epistemological position (dealing with the nature and limits of human knowledge); while atheism and theism are ontological positions (a branch of metaphysics that deals with what types of entities exist). Agnosticism is not to be confused with a view specifically opposing the doctrine of gnosis and Gnosticism—these are religious concepts that are not generally related to agnosticism.

Agnosticism is distinct from strong atheism (also called positive atheism or dogmatic atheism), which denies the existence of any deities. However, the more general variety of atheism, weak atheism (also called negative atheism, and sometimes neutral atheism), professes only a lack of belief in a god or gods, which is not equivalent to but is compatible with agnosticism. Critical atheism admits that a god or gods are meaningful concepts but the evidence for them is not in hand, so a default position of not believing in them must be taken in the interim.

Agnostics may claim that it isn't possible to have absolute or certain spiritual knowledge or, alternatively, that while certainty may be possible, they personally have no such knowledge. In both cases, agnosticism involves some form of skepticism towards religious statements. This is different from the simple irreligion of those who give no thought to the subject.

Thanks, phi83. That makes the difference between an atheist and an agnostic pretty clear. Still seems like a pretty strange poll, to me. Assuming the poll is accurate, which isn't clear from the article, I would use it's results to show the basic, fundamental tolerance of the American people. Bear with me, folks. I say that because an atheist will dismiss religion, any religion, out of hand. An agnostic may not believe in a god, absent the proof, but generally respects those who practice religion. It doesn't mean they may not dislike a particular kind of religion, but usually, in my experience, it's because they see it as... intolerant.

    My 2 cents.

Does this mean that people think it's better to worship Satan than not worshipping any super natural being at all?

I guess one might attempt to draw that conclusion, but I haven't seen any proof.

Its not better or worse, its the belief or knowledge of the existence there of...

I'm agnostic and I believe in a higher calling/dimension/energy/place/existence, but I don't believe in the Christian/Muslim concept heaven or hell. The key to agnostism is the search for knowledge and the use of logic to gain proof. For me, the only proof I hear about heaven or hell is that you have to have faith to believe in it. Well, I need more tangible proof for me to believe... I respect all religions and done my fair share of research, they all have great ideas and moral teachings. But as far as logic and science, they are a little shallow on proof.

Say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.

You know I may be an agnotheist but atleast I'll never be accused of being a hypocrite.

I've tried 5 times and I can't get that dang Jesus clip to run past the 13 second mark.
