How does ones eyes go bad at young age? For example how can someone start losing their vision when they are 10 years old and have to start wearing glasses and such? Is there a fundamental reason for near-sightedness? What causes someone to develop near sightedness as opposed to far sightedness? I tried to search on google for some of the questions but couldnt find an answer. It just explained what the eye looks like when you have that myopic condition, but not what really causes it. Thanks.
Are you looking for something more than the fact that: genetics predispose you, and your environment (tv, low-light conditions, excessive eye work, etc.) brings those characteristics out..which cause your eye to change shape, to change and develop that myopic condition? Except in the case of trauma or whatever. Or I guess are you trying to find the intermediate step?
I was looking more along the lines of environment. Can a 10 year old kid really screw up his vision that fast by watching television all that much or reading in low light?
Using you eyes for any length of time does not make them weaker. You may get tired and may even get a headache with long reading hours, but these symptoms have nothing to do with eyes getting weaker. Sitting closer than necessary to the television may give you a headache, but it will not damage your vision. As with sitting too close to the television, you may get a headache from reading in the dark, but it will not weaken your sight. http://www.agingeye.net/visionbasics/visionmyths.php
genetics is the biggy. i was 8 when i started wearing glasses and 11 when i got contacts. it's been 15 plus years already and i'm looking forward to surgery!!! hopefully in the next year.
Working at a video store while looking at the rental screen, which was a terminal with green dots on a black screen made me lose my sight. I believe regular TV does NOT hurt your vision. If anyone here has worked with terminals plenty of time in their youth, you will tell me I am right. I wore glasses for a while, then stopped wearing them, and today I can see clearly, except for night light glare; I also can't read the street signs under low light conditions whereas others can.
I wish I had perfect vision again. I do not understand why of all the genes my mother passed on, I received the myopia when my father can see almost 20/15.
Now that I think about it, I didn't start wearing glasses until high school when I started to...uhhh...ya know, maybe there is something to that "you'll go blind" thing...
I started wearing glasses in 1st grade and my eyes got considerably worst until I was 21. I just got lasik last summer and I can't say enough about it. I went from being almost being legally blind to having vision better than 20/20 (they call it eagle vision ). But it is absolutely amazing, after dealing with glasses and contacts for most of my life, it was totally worth the money. Glad to give more info. if needed.
Mr. Brightside- IIRC, blurry vision is due to tissue buildup in your eye. It can be due to many things, but my uncle is who is a optomologist (sp?) said television (or video games in my case) doesn't make your vision bad.
You're lucky. I started wearing glasses when I was 9. Today at 33 my vision is 20/675. I have a stigmatism on one of my eyes. I also have "artifacts" on my lenses. Doctors have told me that lasic would correct the myopia but exascerbate the issue with my lenses.
Sorry to hear that. My vision was something like 20/1100 (not sure if that is how it works, my contacts prescription is -11.00) but I'm talking about complete blurriness. Losing a contact back in school basically meant the end of my day (until I put in another or got my glasses).
[strongbad] HOLY CRAP! [/strongbad] That is bad! Waking up in the morning and being able to see must be awesome.
You wouldn't believe it, it was like the scene in Spiderman where his vision is instantly fixed. P.S. I'm not a nerd, but it really was like that.
i started losing vision in high school. couldn't see the ball break anymore and started striking out a ton. had a coach say, "damn..you need to see an eye doctor!" i laughed and thought he was joking. turned out he was right. the next year the school nurse came around and did the whole eye/ear test...i've worn glasses, at least to read, ever since.
Ya, I do that pretty much all day... My wife hates the fact that she now says things like "Nice Jorb" and Teen Girl Squad!"
