I just got my oil changed with regular oil, but I'm thinking about synthetic next time. I've heard that engines get better gas mileage and require fewer oil changes. Anybody with synthetic get better gas mileage? If so, how much better? The guy also told me that if you go synthetic, you can't go back to regular oil. Is synthetic oil worth it?
This was a good thread about the synthetic debate http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=98148&highlight=synthetic EDIT- I lied, that isnt the thread I was looking for.. we had a really good debate over synthetic vs. regular oil, but I cant find it..
I do the 03Corolla's and 03Camry's at the dealer, and they use Castrol Synthetic. I won't do anything else. If they use that one, they must know it's good for the car, and if something goes wrong, I take it back to them. I haven't had a chance to compare, but when I had a '94 corolla, I used the "bubble-type" Pennzoil and never synthetic... maybe engines have changed so much they are good with the synthetic. Google the "synthetic vs. conventional" comparisons.
i've started using synthetic about 8 months ago on my 2002 accord. i think it's great. i don't know how much better my gas mileage is b/c i haven't tested it. but, it does seem to run smoother and i dont' have to change it every 3 months or 3000 miles. i've gone 8000 miles w/o an oil change (just a bit of refill) and the oil seems to be just as clean.
I use synthetic oil but I havn't noticed any difference in the gas mileage. I drive a truck anyways so even if there was one I wouldn't notice it. The reason I use it is so that I dont have to get my oil changed as often. I can go 5-6,000 miles instead of the usual 2-3000.
I switched back and forth between regular oil and synthetic in my cars and didn't notice any problems. I also didn't notice any benefits to fuel economy or anything else. Now I use regular oil, and 5,000-6,000 mile intervals. My car is approaching 100,000 miles. My other car had 140,000 miles before I sold it. Some say that the rubber gaskets respond differently to the different oils, swelling or shrinking and possibly causing leaks. It didn't happen to my car.
Ripley would prefer if you have a human replace your oil, but if you must go the synthetic route, Bishop seems to be ok.
Well, it really depends on what kind of car you have. I own one Acura, and two Toyota, and I just use the regular oil........ I have a Audi also, and using synthetic oil is pretty much a requirement for those kind of cars....................and the price is rediculous high compare to my Toyota or Honda.......7 quart at 6 dollars/q, and oil filter is another 15 dollars, and I don't do it myself, so 20 for the labors, and plus tax, everything total up almost 90 bucks. However, I would say that use synthetic if you care about your car...if not, just use regular oil.
