Looks like Oblivion has some competition for best graphics in a next-gen RPG. This is Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (by SOE) for the PS3 (no, not the PSP or PS2). I guess I don't feel so bad about Josh Robinson trashing his own game/company any more.
The surface textures look decent, but these screens look like something the 360 normally pulls off, IMO. When is Dark Legends going to be released?
Blah. I bought the Sony hype once again and once again am disappointed. Don't current PCs have those graphics?
Yeah, the 360 can pull those off...just by putting in Ninja Gaiden: Black or something. This is close to PSP/PS2 graphics, not PS3/360 IMO. Can't say I'm too surprised given the developer, but I still expected something resembling next-gen. Dark Legends? Did you mean Dark Kingdom (this game)? Should be a launch title IIRC according to Josh Robinson. I think it would be pretty embarrassing if it wasn't. Yeah, these are very disappointing, although I am more disappointed in SOE than SCE right now. The PS3 isn't immune to shovel ware I guess. BTW, I just found some scans of some other PS3 games (Stranglehold, MOH:Airborne, and The Darkness). I'll post them later if anybody wants to see them.
It has that typical look for a bargain bin game. I'm really interested in the game as you can see... Maybe they ported it to the PS3 and tried to add some shiny on their crappy engine.
Yeah, maybe so; it does look a lot like UL on the PSP with some shine thrown on. It might be a fun game, but it sure doesn't look next-gen to me, even at 1080p. BTW, these originally came from a site online, but were taken down. Apparently, a SOE rep said to wait until the 15th. For those paying attention to the news/rumors, it is being rumored that Sony will release some info at that date about the PS3, so that makes sense. I would have posted the rumors about the 15th earlier, but I grew tired of hearing rumors of a possible Sony event "next week or so" and didn’t want to waste a thread on it. Perhaps this one is legit though?
RPG's... on consoles... ha ha ha... no. *eagerly awaiting Oblivion's release now that D&D Online has been a bit of a letdown for me*
For a minute there, I thought: That's from the PSP?? That's amazing!! PS3? Not so much. Not bad either. But not next-gen looking. I'm very curious to see if the Cell chip brings extra performance to physics and AI- things that don't show up in screenshots. For me personally, the actual detail and look of graphics is the least important factor of any game. It's about gameplay, feel, design, that type of stuff.
My obsolete system (Dell Demension 8300, P4 2.8 CPU, 2 gigs of DDR memory, SB Audigy 2 ZS, BFG GeForce 7800 GS (overclocked)) can manage that, and it's AGP. I hope there's more to the PS3 than that. I'm sure there must be, considering how much horsepower it's supposed to have.
I think the problem with the Cell is that its design is too radical. Sure you can run a ton of benchmarks showing how fast it is, but is it useable? You have 9 cpus in the thing (1 main one and 8 children). Maybe if you got all of them running together you can show off some cool effects. But it seems to me 9 cpus is a little hard to control, most of the time you would only be using 2-3, which would be a total waste.
It is a bit radical, although I think CPU designs are headed in the direction that Cell is taking (heck, the PS2 kind of started the trend years ago in a way). According to Tim Sweeny of Epic Games (Unreal Engine), we'll have CPUs with 20+ cores and 80+ threads by 2009. Cell seems like a walk in the park compared to those designs. FWIW, it sounds like a lot of developers are using all 7 SPEs/SPUs for the early games, although it might take some time before they get the most out of them. I posted this a while back, but here's a prediction from a PS3 dev (Deano Calver of Ninja Theory):
