#1 They were the best period. #2 sure #3 HRs antics are a lot of what made the band great. He was fuel to the fire. #4 dont really listen to it #5 Not really but I like both #6 I disagree #7 Bad Brains was better #8 Zepplin can be a little cheesy but they rocked #9 Ramones #10 Sure #11 I guess, but he was also innovator and wrote my favorite solo ever. #12 DEVO is absolutely incredible. Kam, you have no idea.
1. The Misfits are first, all others are wannabes... Bad Brains are in the top 10 though 2. who cares, see number one if you want to talk about the best. 3. Agreed 4. Agreed 5. Agreed 6. Your so wrong on this one! Darkside of the Moon, no questions ask, please don't try to retort you will be proved wrong! 7. Black Flag over Bad Brains, and I would venture that Minor Threat is also over Bad Brains as well. 8. This is laughable... Please step away from the keyboard before you hurt yourself 9. Agreed 10. Deep Purple is OK, not good, not bad, but OK for a bunch of hippies 11. Agreed 12. Devo are geeks, but in a good way
Manny, I don't think i've ever told you I respect your opinions more than anyone I've met. #12 is so spot-on I kinda just stared at it for a minute. I love T.Rex's version of "chidren of the revolution" and Nick Drake and Joy Division have been alternating in my cd player pretty much non-stop the past few weeks. Oh yeah...I forgot to let you know about Sigur Ros...it pretty much made me breathless. I'll myspace-message you about that experience...it was incredddible.
Yea, do that as I was wondering what you thought of them. I am so there to see them again if they come through Nashville. BTW - a week from now, I'll be at the Ryman again to see Wilco!
BOOOOO!!! "Bloodflowers" is a VERY underrated album in my opinion. Almost on par with Wish, even. Crackhead needs a helmet. Those walls he runs in to are making him slur.
Ooh jealou-say. Do you like their new live album? I'd like to see an entire live version of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. So, uh...since you're in Tennessee, going to Bonaroo? I'd kill to see Radiohead...
i agree with everything for the most part you said manny except i dont think joy division is underrated i have seen many articles over the years for them that praise them. one interesting thing about them is one of there major albums i think unknown pleasures was started in recording on the day i was born march, 18 1980.
Yea, "Kicking Television" absolutely well, kicks! That is one reason why I am so excited to see them as that album was one of the best live albums I have heard. Surprisingly, I think I will pass on Bonaroo . Too few acts that I want to see for $180 bucks. I may go at the last minute but I would rather catch Radiohead as they go through Nashville.
Yea, you are probably right as bands like Interpol, Bloc Party, etc have helped push Joy Division to some recognition. However, I still feel that Ian Curtis' band is still unknown to the general public (just like Roxy Music), but maybe that is not such a bad thing.
There was an off broadway fan tibute to Ian, a few years back called "I Wanna Be Adored". I looked into getting the rights to do it, but it was a one time event. Have you seen anything about "Control"?
BTW, I heard Bad Brains - "Reignition" used as bumper music on 950 for some hyper-conservative talk show last Saturday. That was a trip.
oomp, This is the first I have heard of "Control"...hopefully, that project will come to fruition. Thanks for letting me know about it.
Speaking of Joy Division, have you Manny and the rest of you JD fans seen the movie 24 hr Party People? It came out a few years ago and centers around JD's record label 'Factory' and the associated music scene in Britain at the time. Ian and JD (well, actors there of) get a major role. It's really a great movie and should be fairly easy to find at the local video store. I HIGHLY recommend it.
1 – Roxy Music is the most underrated, influential band that the US has never heard of < Of course, I have to agree with this; well, at least the influential part - especially if you include Eno and his solo and production work > 2 – Despite being ragged on by critics, Queen’s albums, “A Kind of Magic”, “The Miracle” and “Innuendo” are all severely underrated < Will have to take your word for it as I stopped buying their LPs after night of the Opera. My favorite work of theirs has always been their first two LP's > 3 – Pink Floyd’s “Animals” is the better album compared to “Wish You Were Here” < I would disagree on that. Why do you choose to compare those particular two? > 4 – No artist had the string of consecutive brilliant albums like Bob Dylan did in “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” to “John Wesley Harding” (a total of 7 straight great albums) < It's easy to acknowledge Dylans brilliance, but I've never been a big fan - my loss no doubt > 5 – The Cars, Boston, The Stone Roses, and Pearl Jam are all in contention for the greatest rock debut album ever < I can think of many debuts I like better, but yeah, the above should be in "contention" > 6 – With the exception of one album apiece for each, the ‘80s were extremely rough times for Bowie, Dylan, and Young as you have to be a diehard fan to buy AND listen to those albums. < No argument from me, but wasn't Bowies 'Let's Dance' and early 80's release. I liked it quite a bit (not like Aladin Sane, Pinups, Ziggy and Hunky Dory) and it was hugely successful. Ooops' in rereading this, I see you did mention except for one LP in the 80's. So good call. 7 – The Rolling Stones’ classic quartet of albums (“Beggars’ Banquet”, “Let It Bleed”, “Sticky Fingers”, and “Exile on Main Street”) were enough to make them one of rock’s greatest bands ever, which is a good thing as they have pretty much mailed it in on every album since then (with the exception being “Some Girls” and “Tattoo You”). < Total agreement and yes, 'Some Girls' is DAMN good> 8 – Despite being one of the best bands today, Coldplay’s debut album is still their best as the ones that have come after it have not shown much growth artistically (the band has continued to go the safe route and use the same formula but with minor tweaking) < Damn, we agree again > 9 – Genesis and Talk Talk are 2 bands that have had the greatest transformation in their sound – going from one extreme to the other. < For me, Genesis' 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' is the culmination of their sound and greatest achievment. Sure, Peter Gabriel left after that, but the two subsequent releases 'Tones on Tail' and 'Whutherg something (title escapes me) pretty much carried on in the traditional Genesis way, but afterwards Collins changed their overall sound dramatically, and not for the better. I know virtually nothing of Talk Talk > 10 – The Beatles’ pre-“Rubber Soul” material is vastly underrated compared to their other stuff <Hmmm, most of the real early Beatles stuff doesn't do much for me > 11 – The Cure need to call it a career as their last solid studio album was 13 years ago in “Wish” (writing this one was very tough for me!) <They should have stopped or else put out better work from Disentigration on as far as I'm coscerned > 12 – Three artists that never get the recognition they deserve are T.Rex, Joy Division, and Nick Drake < Well, Nick Drake certainly hasn't got the recognition less you count critics, who always hail him. > __________________
Nah man - I really need to see more movies! The reason why I used WYWH to compare against Animals because people that I have encountered always go on and on about how it is the 2nd best PF album after DSOTM when it really isn't, IMO. BTW - just got done listening to "No Pussyfooting" by Fripp & Eno - what a weird but wonderful record that is.
