So a friend and I were walking by a downtown post office where they have the recruiting stations. Saw some young guys smoking cigarettes out in front of the building talking.. So I asked them how much they were getting to sign up. The two guys were quite willing to talk. One said: "They are giving out a lot of bonuses. I am getting $30,000 and I have a criminal conviction and only a GED. I don't really have any special skills". He said he was signing up for combat which is where they often give more and that was fine with him as that is what he wanted as "I am a stress junkie"

My buddy said an in law of his wife, a recruiter, claims that young recruits, not reenlistees can get as much as $40k. I doubted that and that is why I asked these young recruits.

I told them: "Good luck. I'm not sure I would do it for this war" (Ok I'm sure I would not, but I was just trying to be polite).

It got me thinking what would it take to get some of the chickenhawks that claim to be gung ho on the bbs to sign up. Would $300 k or $ 400 k do it? $3 million?

On a postive note maybe the increased bonuses will cause the United States to rejoin the world community as a peaceful member.

Hmmm, this has me a thinkin. Clean out Texas prisons by arming our convicts to fight the Islamic horde. You would even have to give them bonuses just a get out of jail card.

glynch, frankly I'm not surprised that you felt compelled to discourage these new recruits by trivializing their future mission by saying "I'm not sure I would do it for this war". I'm sure that really pumped them up.

You truly have no shame, glynch.

I joined the Navy in Oct. 2001, and they didn't give me crap. But, they tried to give me 40k to reenlist after my four years was up. I was like HELLLL NO, not even for a million bucks.

I worked at a recruiting station for 6 months, and I seriously doubt that they got that big of a bonus. The only big bonus people get is if they sign up for something really difficult like working on a submarine. And, to be able to get those jobs, they need to score high on the entrance test.

So, peoples who have "no real skills" and got a GED usually don't qualify for gigantic signing bonuses.

I think that the recruiter probably tricked them. They do that a lot. My recruiter promised me I wouldn't be assigned to a ship, AND that I would automatically be accepted to Harvard U. after my enlistment was up. In retrospect, I was a stupid stupid kid.

They are trying to get you to sign up for the military voluntarily. Of course they are counting on the recruits being naive. See the movie Private Benjamin or Stripes for how to get yourself recruited.

Bigtexx, you are the one, who despite constantly claiming how vital the Iraq War is, claimed that you were too valuable to go, based I guess on your SAT score, when in reality you were an untrained undergrad at Rice. I believe you called it "having a comparative advantage".

So can you go back and answer my question in the other thread? Why are conservatives abandoning the president like so many rats from a sinking ship?

Party boy My brother is military police 9 years (retired) works for KBR. They've been throwing all kinds of money at him to go to Iraq and help with reconstruction. He too says not no but HELL NO!!!

The comparative advantage out of that is they could be easily manipulated, but hardly so when more sophisticated guys like bigtexxx are in uniforms.

Why do so many seem to have contempt for ANYONE in uniform?

I attended a speech by Richard Meyers here at UT last week and anytime a uniformed person walked by they were hissed at by protestors. The same happened anytime the General spoke of another soldier. What gives?

good to see that rice education working for you. im sure your parents are thrilled to know that their $150,000 is paying off.

a young entrepreneur like myself has more to concern himself with than using proper grammar in a basketball chatroom.

someday i hope to have such poor grammar that i could be president!

The thing is I expected it from the kids there but half the protestors were above the age of 30! I was shocked because I never thought someone of that age would HATE anyone in uniform. It was crazy.

...and I didn't mean to imply YOU would if that's how you understood it, so my bad. This just reminded me of that night.

no no, it's cool and I didn't take it that way.

I'm from a military family that's all. Its kind of ingrained to show respect.
