I dont see it differently at all. The 1836 name was vetted before it was announced publicly to local prominent Hispanics who had no problem with it. In addition, almost every single Mexican person on the net, tv, radio, etc has responded that they had no problem with it. It was only when a few morons in the political community got their hands on it that it blew up. Absolute disgrace By the way, sorry, I didn't mean to double post
I guess since they are catering to a predominant hispanic community who they are counting on for a large part of their fan base, they don't want to take any chance WHATSOEVER of offending that group I guess.
The really funny thing about it is that there were Mexican-born hispanics that fought for Texas' independence too! Oops.
If the "group" didn't like 1836 because it was the year Texas declared and won its independence then they are not going to like an image of Sam Houston on the logo. http://tejanopride.com/main.html
The level of whining by those who oppose the name change has been far louder than the whining done by those who wanted the name changed in the first place. All that for a team that a) most people hated the name to begin with and b) hasn't even played a real game in the city of Houston. Can we just get over it at this point?
Sometimes I wonder if the name change was halfway intentional just because of the attention it has garnered. I mean, would anyone here have been discussing this soccer team this extensively had it not been for the naming controversy? If they stuck with 1836, we would have all forgotten about Houston soccer weeks ago.
i just wanna throw in that the texas rangers slaughtered scores of mexicans in the mexican-american war. they were even referred by the mexicans as diablos tejanos (texas devils). they were also notorious for looting mexican villages and hanging innocent mexican civilians. and after the annexation of texas, the rangers were used to kick mexicans off texas land that they rightfully owned. no one says crap about dallas using them for a team name.
That's because Dallas doesn't have such outstanding politicians as Sylvia Garcia to turn everything into a race issue.
If you don't like the discussion then ignore it instead of being rude and telling me that I'm whining and to get over it. Complaining about people complaining about people complaining about people complaining....fun for the whole family.
... I agree, again, I still haven't seen any concrete evidence of influential people /groups coming out and saying they'll boycott the other name. The whole thing has been very sketchy as to who or what opposes anything: http://houston1836.blogspot.com/2006/02/khou-jumps-into-mix.html
Is that any ruder than telling people who might be offended that they are whining and that they should get over it?
I was just asking for people to get over it because it's over and done with. I loved the name and I don't like that what sounds like one person was able to do this, but it's a soccer team that hasn't even played a real game yet. The level of whining by those opposed to the name change has seriously outweighed the criticism by those who were offended by the name. My post certainly wasn't ruder than say:
