I still haven't heard of a single person or group who came forward and publicly opposed it - though I haven't been paying that much attention. Since they're giving it a Euro-ish name like last time, why not go the whole hog? It should be Dynamo Houston, like Dynamo Kiev or Dynamo Moscow. Not Houston Dynamo.
Well I have to commend the organization for turning a pretty s**tty situation around nicely. They took the time (and bumped the announcement multiple times) to avoid changing to an embarassing name (i.e. Mustangs or Apollos). The name fits well, though Dynamo Houston would have been cooler. I'm especially glad they kept the colors cause they rock. And the new logo looks damn good (though I am dissapointed Sam Houston isn't in there anymore). Granted, they could have shown some balls and stuck to their guns and ran w/ 1836. But if they had to change, they would have been hard pressed to do a better job. (they'll always be 1836 in the back of my mind though)
What about the "Houston Problems", as in "...we have a..."? Maybe by making the pun/phrase so ridiculously obvious nobody would use it anymore. I can dream at least.
And even if Mexicans were to complain, who gives a ****?!?! We are in Texas. We won our independence from that country!!! Do you think anybody in Philadelphia gives a **** if someone from England finds "76ers" offensive?
If people from England were going to be a big part of the Sixers fan base, I'm guessing they would have second thoughts about using that name. I agree that it is stupid, but you have to understand why this is a completely different issue than the 76ers.
It's my understanding that most Mexican-Americans were fine with the name. If you can have teams named the 76's, Patriots, Redskins, Bills, Braves, Indians, etc, then you most certainly can have a name like 1836. It's just a number after all.
Yes, I've heard something about that team. Just wondering what could possibly be offensive about it, to anyone. Other than Oilers fans, of course.
Well... if Mexican-Americans could find 1836 offensive even though its only meant to signifty an important moment in Houston's history, then I'm sure some Native-Americans could find offense from a team named after a buffalo hunter/union soldier/indian fighter even though said name was a prominent historical figure of the Old West and not meant to be offensive. Hell there are still high schools named after confederate generals. I'd say there are plenty of other team names that are more offensive than 1836. But what's done is done. Dynamo it is...for some reason though I keep thinking Metroid Prime when I see that name.
Here is how to pronounce it...you can listen to it here: http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/audio.pl?dynamo01.wav=dynamo
