Correction, Haywood and Mihm don't belong on that list. [This message has been edited by SooneRockStro (edited March 23, 2000).]
i agree... Haywoode most likely will stay in school anyways. I think Johnson and Peterson are worthy of being on the list also. ------------------
Okay, I've got to sound off on Haywood for a second (maybe more)... Those that think Mihm is a project, you haven't seen Haywood play yet. He is a strong player on the college level and simply gets close enough to the basket to overwhelm his opponent with a dunk or a layup. That, IMO, sums up his offensive game. That probably summed up Shaq's game coming out of school, too. The differene is that Shaq was incredibly athletic and was the focus of triple, quadruple teams in college. Haywood hasn't had to face anything close to that and yet still can't get his shot off unless it's a dunk. Don't tell me that he has some sort of a turnaround or even a drop step. I've watched over a dozen of his games since last year and it ain't there. He's a bit slow, has poor footwork, not a quick leaper or particularly high one. Oh yeah, he also disappears in games like nobody else since Sampson used to do. How can a guy his size get ZERO rebounds in a game? If I recall, Haywood pulled that one on the Heels earlier this year. Mihm, IMO, has similar problems, but to a lesser extent. Mihm's redeeming trait is that he has a good stroke (inconsistent sometimes). Those that say he doesn't must be sooners. Either way, I wouldn't want either one to be our franchise center. If we were talking about the mid first round, yeah, I'd take Mihm. Haywood, I'd wait the to late first round or second. ------------------
I agree. Haywood is not that good. he's big, but in the NBA, he's not that big. He's has no moves. He can't even dribble the ball in the post to back someone down. We say these things about Cato, but Kelvin is very athletic and can run the floor for easy hoops. Haywood is a goon. ------------------ - Beck Dream...bring back the goggles
Mihm is a much better center prospect at this stage than Brendan Haywood. Haywood is a lanky 7 footer that has had the luxury (as previously stated) of mostly one on one coverage. He is bigger and simply a better position player than his foe, so he gets a lot of easy tips, dunks, and short hooks or fadeaways. When he learns to face up, hit a 15 footer, or gets an array of post moves, maybe we look at him. I look at Mihm well before I even consider Haywood. They are both sophs right? Or is Haywood a freshman? ------------------ HOOP-T Hey Shaq, Acme called, and they want their bricks back!
Both are juniors. Haywood is a big 260lb but lacks true offensive skills. Most his shots are those easy layups or wide open dunks. Mihm on the other hand has a nice jumper and still manages to score despite double and triple teams. Mihm would be a good pick up but Fizer would probably be the better choice. Both will go high and may be gone before the 6th or 7th pick. ------------------
FIZER FIZER FIZER..... ------------------ HOOP-T Hey Shaq, Acme called, and they want their bricks back!
If we could get Haywood, Mihm or Woods with our pick I would be happy. Haywood and Woods both tore up a Stanford team sending at them two sizable 6'10.5" guys plus Madsen--who comes in a very strong 6' 8" 240lb package. Haywood has also played pretty well against Brand and Woods againt UCLA (Moiso is a little thin but is a good 6' "11 player on both ends). That is pretty good company that Haywood and Woods have had there way with on both ends of the court. These guys at least look like decent 7 footers (much more potential to be a complete center than say Polynice, McIllave, Dampier, Purdue or Cato--who all gotten fat contracts in their day). It is very hard to find a decent center in this league, it is almost hopeless to wait for the next Hakeem or even TD, if a decent true center is aroud it would be worth a top 6 pick no question. I am not saying we have to pick a center--if we think Fizer, Swift, Morris or Martin is there and is a better player so be it, but these 3 centers who might be out there look pretty good to me. ------------------
I don't really think that Haywood will go in the lottery, I expect him to go mid to late first round. Fizer will easily be around for us to get him in the lottery, unless Iowa State wins it all. Also, I think Mihm will be first pick in the draft simply because he's the best center available and the Bulls really need a center. Woods, will go like mid first round as well I think because he is pretty skinny. Hopefully he will play a lot better in the NBA than Keith Closs (who is a fricking freak of nature by the way...lol) ------------------ The clock is winding down, and Scottie has the ball, Cato is sprinting towards him, Pippen shoots and here comes Cato. Man did you see that block?!!! Ouch it hit Scottie right between the legs. ITS FINAL!! THE ROCKETS ARE THE CHAMPIONS OF Y2K!!!
I don't want to get the rep as a negative guy who runs down all the players that people like, but I'll share my opinion concerning Terrance Morris. He's not coming out, so this may be a pointless discussion, but he is being mentioned. Anyway, Morris really began to develop his reputation last year on a very good Maryland team. He was an excellent compliment to Francis, Ekezie, Profit, etc. Everybody expected him to step it up this year and become the man. Well, Maryland's season has ended and it would be legitimate to say that Morris was, like, the 3rd best player on his team. Dixon and Baxter were both better this year, as indicated by first team all-acc selections. Morris was a second teamer. Now, I've heard that one of Morris's strengths is that he doesn't force his game, but lets the game come to him. It has been suggested that he plays under control and has versatile skills that allow him to be a force in a number of different areas. IF this is true, Morris would be like a James Worthy clone. But I just don't see it. In my book, all this talk of Morris playing under control is simply a way to spin the fact that he's a passive player who hasn't shown the capacity to be a star. I don't dispute the skills that Morris is supposed to have, but I think the mental toughness to lead and dominate isn't there. If I were to make a comparision between him and a current NBA player, I'd say that he reminds me alot of Robert Horry. Even if he was coming out this year and even with the Rockets' need of a SF, I would not be excited to take him. On another note, I was impressed with Desmond Mason tonight against Seton Hall. I think he was hurt somehow, but he showed some heart and a willingness to take the shots when his team needed him. He's made huge strides since his earlier years at OSU. I still don't know if he'll go in the first half of the first round, but I'd rather have him than a player like Chris Porter. Another comparison I'd like to make is between Mason and Morris Peterson. I like Mo Pete, too, but I honestly can't think of something that Peterson does appreciably better than Mason. They're about the same size, except Peterson is a lefty. I'm not sure about ball-handling, but I think that Peterson plays the 3 spot for MSU, too. My guess is that they're pretty similar in that area as well. Someone who's seen Peterson play often, can you please comment? ------------------
Well I can tell you Peterson is Mason with a shot. Something to the lines of that. Morris is not a go to guy. He's a Pippen. He can't be a leader, but he's a great compliment. He has a fantastic game, why is everyone so down on him just cuz he can't be a go to guy? We have Francis on the team, we need a compliment for him, and Morris is one hell of one. ------------------ A big time draft site has tried to stunt our growth, but we will succeed! The little draft site that could!
rocketfan34, I can respect the fact that we see differently on Morris. Heaven forbid I should say something positive about Pippen, but I don't think that Morris compares very favorably against our beloved Quitten. First of all, Pippen has dominated during his career. He's done it by being a force on the defensive end, doing little things like running the break and passing the ball. Just because he's done it with a 15-17 pts/game average doesn't mean that he hasn't been dominant. So, my basis for Morris not being that good is not based solely on his scoring average or his ability to put the ball in the hoop. My complaint about Morris is that he disappears in games. That's completely different than being a complimentary player. Now, Quitten is quite famous for his disappearing acts, too. That's due to Scottie's suspect character (immaturity, childishness, etc.) not his mental toughness. I don't think that those two are the same. While we are comparing these two, Pippen has a much better set of skills than Morris, whose primary strength is that he's 6' 10" and can shoot. He's not very strong so his post-up potential isn't encouraging. He's not good enough at handling the rock to play anything but the 3. Again, he reminds me of Horry. A better Horry, but a Horry nonetheless. As for Morris's fit with the Rockets, IMO, Francis is best suited as a do it all guard that averages 18 pts/game, taking over on different occasions with big scoring games. That's the type of role that he played at Maryland and the type of role that Steve himself has stated he likes. Yes, he's the franchise player, but not in the Jordan type way where he's the leading scorer and shot taker. So, I think that the Rockets need the type of player that can really play off of Francis's skill and score. Morris, in this regard, would be a poor fit because he's the same type of player (only much less so) than Steve. ------------------
