What are your opinions of him? I never cared for his game much I only found him to be a little better on Offense that Mutombo [Mutombo with a jump shot] and not as good on Defense He is not a top 10 all time Center IMO He was a solid servicable center I think the defining moment for me was the Pacer series where he could have ended it with a finger roll and missed it. How does a 7 ft dude miss a fricking finger roll He was a solid Center. Good Center. but not GREAT. Hakeem was GREAT Rocket River he will goto the hall . . .but is he a 1st ballot guy?
As an old Bulls fan living in NY, Ewing will never be GREAT as he didn't win a ring but with the supporting cast he got, he definitely got the most out of them.
Ewing was a warrior, love him or hate him, that much one must admit. He wasn't nearly as skilled or quick as Dream was, but he played with a lot of heart and toughness, and that made up for it. He is a great center, no doubt, but I would say he's more of the David Robinson mold, which is not a knock on him by any means, both were great players...just not quiet as great as Dream, Shaq, Kareem, Wilt, and Russell.
Ewing wasn't blessed with the leaping ability that defined Hakeem. Nor was he as quick, which was obvious. And man he never got the calls from the refs. Even though I wasn't a fan of his, I could clearly see the refs didn't give him his due. He was tough and tried had. Got stuffed a lot but kept going. "We make a lot of money, but we spend a lot of money" <--- Scored a 6 on the Wonerlic too.
I was never a big fan, but the guy averaged 20/10 for his career and even mid-20's in scoring and 11 or 12 boards during an era dominated by other big men like Olajuwon. I'd put him top 10. Here's mine... 1. Jabbar 2. Chamberlin 3. Olajuwon 4. Russell 5. Shaq 6. Walton 7. Mikan 8. Mo Malone 9. Robinson 10. Ewing Robinson and Ewing to me were close, but Robinson has the rings.
I WAS a longtime Knick fan until they got rid of Ewing. He was THE heart and soul of those teams. Considering his stats and that he was THE go-to guy on a team often surrounded by CBA players, has beens and players past their prime; and still the Knicks were able to make the playoffs and may have been able to win at least one championship (if not for MJ and Dream), I'd say that Ewing was definitely one of the all time great centers. Also, keep in mind how many different coaches he had in his career (Rick Pitino, Hubie Brown, Bob Hill, Stu Jackson, Pat Riley, Van Gundy and I think a few others) and the adjustments he's had to make to their styles, and yet he stayed consistent throughout. I would rank him #10 out of the top 10 as well, although it also depends on how well Yao fares when all is said and done for his career, and whether you consider other current great players as centers ie. Duncan, Stoudemaire, etc.
Ewing's hop in the lane no call annoyed me to no end. I never liked him. But he did have a stretch of good years of being a great player. Probable top 10 all time. JR Rider rejecting his tomahawk dunk was awesome.
Ewing is definitely one of the greatest centers ever. No, he wasn't Dream, but I only put Russell clearly ahead of Hakeem (considering the defensive shortcomings of some of the top guys) for career value. Peak value you can put Kareem and Wilt ahead of Dream too. Shaq stopped playing defense by the time he was 25, but at his peak he was as good as Dream. Still, Ewing was wonderful, and nobody seems to remember that early in his career he was a defensive force. Watch Georgetown games; the guy had big hops and excellent timing on D. He carried it over to the pros before his knees went to hell. Also, he came into the league without any kind of offensive game and left one of the best and most efficient scorers ever. Couldn't pass for sh*t, but you can't have anything. Look at the roster of his team that faced the Rockets in the finals. There wasn't another player on the team that was within spitting distance of being an allstar. He wasn't Dream, but Ewing was awesome and always terribly underappreciated.
Robert Parrish Rick Smits Ralph Sampson Mutombo Sikma Lanier Ewing YAO IS BETTER NOW than Ewing was - He is in that range .. only reason Sampson isn't ahead of him is because sampson had a shortened career David Robinson is DEFINATELY ahead of him Robinson had way more game he was just a wuss heart is great but on the Skillz level I tired of watching him shuffle his feet even to take a spot up jump shot Rocket River
I have respect for Ewing, definately tougher than Admiral-though not as skilled. He was perfect for New York--but Dream put him in his place. Hakeems the greatest 5 of all time, most offensively skilled, quickest, best defender-he had it all. Hopefully Yao will reach his level when it is all said and done.
He pushed Dream and the Rockets to 7 games. Actually Hakeem pushed it to 7 either way you look at it, Ewing was pretty damn good. Give him some props.
I hated him as a Knick, but he was an elite center in his day. He was probably the most boring great center to play in the modern era, but he got the job done... except against Hakeem.
I thought we were talking about his son at first. And from what I've seen, he sucks. His father, was a pretty good player. He was quite aggresive
Well if he's one of the 50 greatest of all time, I'm pretty sure he's one of the ten best centers of all time too. Saying Robert Parrish was better is a joke. He played in an era with lots of dominant centers and still was a perrenial all star. His rebounding numbers are similar to what I think Yao's will be - under 10 his first couple years, but then double digits as he learned how to box out, etc. Until his declining years, he always scored 22-25 ppg with a couple seasons of 26ppg and 28ppg - Mutumbo never even got anywhere near 18ppg so that's a terrible comparison. Always a pretty good defender and terrific shot-blocker. He's probably still a top 50 player even if you include guys like Kobe, Iverson, Duncun, etc.
Who are you talking about? Patrick has a son named Patrick Jr. and I think he's in high school. If you are referring to Daniel Ewing, they are not related.
1. Chamberlin 2. Jabbar 3. Olajuwon 4. Russell 5. Shaq 6. Moses Malone 7. Walton 8. Mikan 9. Robinson 10. Lanier . . . . 99. Chuck Nevitt 100. Ewing
