Suprised I did not see this one posted: Twist and Shout (The Beatles) - The original was by The Isley Brothers. I think a good case can be made that the Beatles' version is the best rock and roll song of all time.
Just for myself, I'm not going to post anything where the band made the song more popular than the original artist - ie. All Along the Watchtower, etc. Madman Across the Water - Bruce Hornsby (original by Elton John) To Make You Feel My Love - Billy Joel (original by Bob Dylan) Got to Get You Into My Life - Earth, Wind and Fire (original by the Beatles) Eye in the Sky - Jonatha Brooke (original by Alan Parsons Project) Baker Street - Foo Fighters (original by Gerry Rafferty) Born in Time - Eric Clapton (original by Bob Dylan) I Love You More Today Than Yesterday - Goldfinger (original by Spiral Starecase) That's a few.
The Replacements : Hey Good Lookin' 20th Century Boy Soul Asylum : Juke Box Hero Husker Du : Eight Miles High Incubus : Turning Japanese
Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana (David Bowie) All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Bylan) I Shot the Sherriff - Eric Clapton (Bob Marley) Ticket To Ride - The Carpenters (The Beatles) I know there's a ton more, can't think of any right now...
Video Killed the Radio Star - Ben Folds Five (The Buggles?) Manic Depression - Kings X (Hendrix) War Pigs - Faith No More (Sabbath) Veloria - Weezer (Pixies) A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall - Edie Brickell and New Bohemians (Dylan) West Side Story - Buddy Rich Big Band (Bernstein)
What an incredible song that is. Never heard Joel's version, but the song itself sends shivers up my spine.
I think a good case can be made that any discussion of "what is the best rock and roll song of all time" would lead to shouting, screaming, finger-wagging, and possibly fisticuffs.
Take Me To The River - Talking Heads (Al Green) Summertime Blues - The Who (Eddie Cochran) Whiskey In The Jar - Metallica (Thin Lizzy) Got To Get You Into My Life - Earth Wind & Fire (Beatles) With A Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker (Beatles) I Shot The Sheriff - Eric Clapton (Bob Marley) The Sound Of Silence - Stanley Jordan (Simon & Garfunkel)
Have You Never Been Mellow? - The Nip Drivers (Olivia Newton John) 99 Red Balloons - 7 Seconds (Nena) Kids in America - The Muffs (Kim Wylde) Got theTime - Anthrax (Joe Jackson)
5 that weren't mentioned: Such Great Heights -- Iron and Wine (Postal Service) My Little Corner of the World -- Yo La Tengo (Anita Bryant) Maybe I'm Amazed -- Jem (Paul McCartney) Little Honda -- Yo La Tengo (Beach Boys) Satisfaction -- Cat Power (Rolling Stones)
I'm a little embarrassed to mention this one, but it is so FAITHFUL to the original...but Sugar Ray's version of the Joe Jackson classic, "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" is amazing, IMO.
Korn's version of Another Brick in the wall is easily the best cover, its even better than the original. Also Avril Lavigne covering Chop Suey is just FANTASTICAL.
I think Marilyn Manson basically wins at life with his covers. Cause without 'em, I'd never even give his stuff a chance. My favorite: Sweet Dreams (c/o Eurythmics)
