Suprised I did not see this one posted:

Twist and Shout (The Beatles) - The original was by The Isley Brothers.

I think a good case can be made that the Beatles' version is the best rock and roll song of all time.

Just for myself, I'm not going to post anything where the band made the song more popular than the original artist - ie. All Along the Watchtower, etc.

Madman Across the Water - Bruce Hornsby (original by Elton John)
To Make You Feel My Love - Billy Joel (original by Bob Dylan)
Got to Get You Into My Life - Earth, Wind and Fire (original by the Beatles)
Eye in the Sky - Jonatha Brooke (original by Alan Parsons Project)
Baker Street - Foo Fighters (original by Gerry Rafferty)
Born in Time - Eric Clapton (original by Bob Dylan)
I Love You More Today Than Yesterday - Goldfinger (original by Spiral Starecase)

    That's a few.

What an incredible song that is. Never heard Joel's version, but the song itself sends shivers up my spine.

I think a good case can be made that any discussion of "what is the best rock and roll song of all time" would lead to shouting, screaming, finger-wagging, and possibly fisticuffs.

I'm a little embarrassed to mention this one, but it is so FAITHFUL to the original...but Sugar Ray's version of the Joe Jackson classic, "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" is amazing, IMO.

Korn's version of Another Brick in the wall is easily the best cover, its even better than the original.

Also Avril Lavigne covering Chop Suey is just FANTASTICAL.

I think Marilyn Manson basically wins at life with his covers. Cause without 'em, I'd never even give his stuff a chance.

My favorite: Sweet Dreams (c/o Eurythmics)
