He was a FA, but I don't think the Rockets made him an offer.

Man if that was the case, he'd be the next Arvydas Sabonis (Portland Trail Blazers) but with much more game! LOL...

Sabonis in his prime was much better than Yao in my humble opinion.

Incidentally, if Yao ever becomes a Dirk-lite and attempts a few three-pointers every game, I will be the first to advocate trading him. Camping a 7'6" low-post monster behind the arc is an absolute waste.

For me, I don't think it's necessary to have a purely three-point shooting power forward, but it'd be nice to have one with a consistent outside shot AND the ability to rebound and block shots. If we had a 25-26 year old Donyell Marshall on this team, he'd be perfect.

Sabonis in his prime played for the USSR.

His rebounding and Block numbers are pretty solid, but you can't be a PF in the league and shoot 36%

Yes, and he was an absolute monster. The guy blew his Achilles tendon and knees late in his European career. He then came over to the U.S. in 1995 as a 31 year old rookie and still finished second in voting for both Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year.

If he had been able to play in the NBA when he was drafted in 1986, someone with his skillset definitely could've excelled (and even dominate) in the NBA. Portland of the late 80s/early 90s with a combination of Drexler and a young Sabonis could have won a championship easily. For example, Portland's 1992 team took the Bulls to six games. With Sabonis on that team, I believe they would've won.

Sabonis in his prime might have been the best center in the world.

Even if Yao does take a few 3-pointers, that is not the same as "camping behind the arc."

    There's a differene between a few 3-pointers in a season, and a few 3-pointers every game.

We all accused Eddie Griffin of taking too many threes, and he averaged 3.1 attempts a game while he played for us. Dirk Nowitzki's career averages for three-point attempts per game is 3.8. Reggie Miller attempted 4.5 three-pointers a game in his career.

I'm sorry, but if Yao suddently started taking a few (as in 2-4) three-pointers every game, it is camping behind the arc....especially for someone with his low post skills.
