From Astros.com......well deserved and long overdue.......

ELSTON WINS FORD C. FRICK AWARD
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum announced
today that Gene Elston, whose baseball broadcasting career
spanned 47 years, primarily as a radio announcer for the
Houston Astros franchise, has been named the 2006 recipient
of the Ford C. Frick Award, presented annually for major
contributions to baseball broadcasting. Elston served as
the lead voice of Houston baseball, beginning with the
    Colt .45s in 1962, through 1986.

Elston was selected by the Houston National League
franchise as their lead radio man for the inaugural
1962 season. While his list of partners changed over the
years, his voice remained constant, delivering the game
to a growing legion of fans throughout Texas.

    famous calls >>

July 28-31 in Cooperstown, New York.

Congrats to Gene! I had signed the petition at astrosdaily for the past few years. It's a well deserved honor.

That would be the wise course of action.

AD's history section & media clips are excellent though.

I've only known Milo Hamilton as the Astros Broadcaster.

I was born in '83, so yeah. I only know of Gene an Jim, and Vandermeer, and I think Russ Small. and milo.

I think they are in the process of rehosting their site, before the season starts.

[Edit: Elston story is now up @ AstroDaily.]

I liked Gene MUCH better than Milo.

I was at the last regular season in the Astrodome and they both spoke during the closing festivites. Gene introduced the players who played during his tenure with his typical style and grace. Then Milo grabbed the mic and started introducing the players who played during his tenure and basically made an ASS of himself yelling and screaming and saying WHOOOOOOOAAAAAA. You know, like normal....

    Bring back Gene!

I remember that, it was embarassing to watch.

I think people are really going to like the new radio guys, especially Raymer.

No way. I'm not even an Astros fan anymore since they got rid of Ash.

I'm not going to listen to the games on the radio anymore, at least until Milo retires.
