Gang, With Gizmondo looking dead, it is time I get some health coverage for my family. Does anyone know a good place to get it? Also, is it possible to join a group of people that are individuals and get a better rate? Any information would be helpful. Thanks, DD
I sell health insurance in North Carolina. Some of these things will be determined by state law, but I've never heard of a gaggle of people being able to go in together to buy health insurance. Actually, though, a lot of individual plans require you to join an association in order to buy the health insurance. Forming a company is one thing, but aligning for the purpose of buying insurance is another thing entirely. You have to have a higher purpose-- like making money! Look into the HSAs. You'll cut your premiums down and have another vehicle to save money in a tax-deferred account which can accrue into your retirement years. If you are a rare consumer of health care and want more of the catastrophic protection, an HSA plan could be for you. Families can get deductibles down close to $2,000-- in most cases this is a shared deductible. All healthcare received by any insured in the family is going towards satisfying the deductible. You can then get, typically, 50%, 80% or 100% coinsurance. Most of the plans that I've sold have been the high deductible/100% coinsurance variety. I don't know what carriers you might have in Texas.
The Texas Department of Insurance has a rate guide for Texas Small Employer Health Insurance. Here's the link: http://www.tdi.state.tx.us/consumer/sergcityaus.html Although its not individual health insurance, it gives you a starting point as it identifies a number of potential carriers and their phone numbers.
I was Ramsey's Endorsed Local Provider for Health Insurance for about a year when HSAs first hit the market. He's very big on them. Better than Zander which is effectively his ELP for Term Life, go straight to www.DaveRamsey.com and find the ELP for Health Insurance. You can submit your contact information right online and it will provide you with the contact information for his closest ELP to Austin and of course also submit your contact information to the ELP. I shoulda thought of that earlier...
I was very interested in this thread since I am starting a new job with a small company that doesn't provide benefits. It's sad that nobody can help much with this, yet the Garfield thread has plenty of replies. Why is it so hard to find good info about health insurance, and the people who you call and talk to just sound like weasels out to make a buck like they are selling a car? Can you not get decent, affordable coverage unless you work for a big company? Something is wrong.
It's just the health insurance business. It's why they have agents. And also, because most people need to be informed of the different kinds of coverage that are available. Try Humana or Fortis. Both are cheap "actual" health insurances in Texas.
