There, I said it. I was reading that page2 article where some guy said Yao was mechanical. It took me 2 second and I realized the guy was right. Not totally mechanical, not still, mechanicall. And I am a huge fan of Yao. Now, I remember his rookie season, in which he still can't produce consistently, but he doesn't seem mechanical to me. He even has some deam-like moves, and occational sweet passes. Now Yao is producing more consistently. He has some go to moves. Mainly, baseline turnaround, spin to baseline, and 2 dribble to the middle then jumper/hook. But those creative moves, passes are far and between now. He does seem somewhat mechanical. So, IS that Yao? Did he play that way in China before he came to NBA? Was it JVG or P Ewing? I've never watched much Ewing in his playing days. Is he more of a mechanical kind? Do they make Yao more mechanical in the process of shaping up his go to moves, taking advantage of his height? I will watch the Year of Yao tonight with those thoughts. And you guys can flame away.
I remember reading a Yao interview on Sina, in which he said he couldn't do those dream-like moves once the defense started to pay more attention to him (DT/TT etc). That said, I don't have an answer to your question.
What exactly does, being "mechanical" mean anyway? Is it lack of fluidity, or creativity? Or is it emotion like being a robot. And what's so bad about it. As long as you get the job done (Kind of like Shawn Marion's jumpshot. It certainly ain't pretty, but it goes in pretty consistently). And while Yao doesn't always get the job done, I wouldn't say it's for some lack of creativity, or emotion.

I don't care if he is "mechanical", too slow, lacks quickness, etc, etc, etc.... All I care about is that, despite ALL these flaws everyone continues to bring up about him, he is still a 20+/10+/2 center in an era tailor-made for guards. Oh yea, he is still showing signs of improving. What the hell more you want?
EXACTLY!! He is never going to be the Dream or O'Neil only Yao Ming. He is one that is improving and growing stronger each year.Possibly it takes him longer than the average to reach his peak!

TD is ten time more mechanical than Yao. It is either that bank shot, or dribble to the middle and be sent to FT line. I don't see that being a problem for the Spurs. Jabar is also mechanical. He scores 80% of his points on that sky hook, again and again and again. I don't see that being a problem for the Lakers. It would be nice if Yao can produce some creative passes like he did in the first year, or just relax a bit and enjoy the game as he wants. That is all I ask of.
