I've been in the market for a new PC. Looking to spend about $600 or so on it. I don't necessarily want it to be a PC gaming monster, but being able to handle the majority of games out today would be nice. I have a monitor, so I'll probably only get a package with just the CPU, motherboard, HD, etc. If I see a deal that includes a monitor for really cheap, though, I'll consider it. I've been monitoring anandtech, fatwallet, gotapex, etc, but I've been wondering if anyone has seen or heard of a deal that might not be included on those?
I blew my motherboard last week and had to get a new rig. The mom and pop computer store down the street with the geeks in the back room beat the price/performance of the big guys. They should be pretty good on the warranty work too, if they stay in business. I only wish I had had them put in a upscale fan, this one on the P-4 is really loud.
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/hot_offers_dt?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd Dell has a 9150 with a 19" Flat Panel LCD monitor for $699 w/ free shipping Also has a 5150 with a 19" Flat Panel LCD monitor for $559 w/ free shipping. IMO these are great deals.
Yeah, I saw those on Fat Wallet and odds are, I will probably end up getting one of them even though I will be paying for the monitor (but to be honest, those are much better monitors than the one I have). Also, what is the difference between the 9150 and the 5150? They are both showing to be the same processor speed (3.0 GHz) from what I can see.
Dell is the new Compaq in terms of quality. Pure crap. Avoid at all costs. Unless you want to spend $400 for an extended, in-home service warranty.
That's what I have been reading so far as well on different forums, so I think I'm going to continue to wait and see what other kind of deals arise.
Who is a good brand, then? Is Gateway still pretty reputable? I haven't bought a computer in 6 years, and I remember hating Compaq during that time because they were expensive and had too many proprietary parts that you couldn't interchange or upgrade with other brands. I must admit I hate Dell simply for the pot smoking ****head that saturated my TV for the longest time calling me "Dude".
I bought a 9150 off EBay for $500 (no tax, no shipping)... dual-core. Brand new. I'd say that's the way to go, as people on FatWallet, etc., who buy the deals with the 24" monitors then sell the machines cheap. Oh - the trick is to try and find one in your area (or driveable) so you don't have to pay the $$$ in shipping.
I've bought Dell's for years including my most recent last year. Very happy. Also, I am an IT professional that recommends purchases to companies all the time and I can't think of ONE customer that complained about their Dell systems I've recommended. Bang for the buck, they're tough to beat. DonnyMost must have got a lemon.
I'm typing on my brand new Inspiron E1705 that I just scored from Dell. Last week they had a $650 off and I got an additional $35 off for $1439. Not bad for a nice big "17 inch widescreen LCD, and a dual core cpu. I upgraded somethings, extra 9-cell battery, GeForce Go 7800, uxga screen, dvd burner, 7200RPM HD, Bluetooth, Windows Media Remote Control, so it came out a little higher for me.
I got my 700m through their 750 off 1499 coupon...you should wait for that deal, its is the best i have seen. My total was like 800 bucks free shipping
MY friend has been using a Dell for more than 3 years and has never had any problem. And they always have some incredible deals.
