Actually it's The University of Texas at Austin, so it doesn't really represent the entire state. There's also:

The University of Texas at Arlington
The University of Texas at Brownsville
The University of Texas at Dallas
The University of Texas at El Paso
The University of Texas - Pan-American
The University of Texas of the Permian Basin
The University of Texas at San Antonio
The University of Texas at Tyler

UT-Austin branch is just one of many The University of Texas's.

bigtex, no one I know (Texan or otherwise) experiences bewilderment about campus location when at Austin is not included in any reference.

Besides, how could you forget the University of Texas Houston Health Science Center.

Well that's the official name of the school. I like to be correct when I refer to it - you'll notice that I typically write UT-Austin to differentiate it from other schools in the university of Texas system.

I included only the universities in the system, not the medical institutions.

of course not, but your analogy is imperfect. the mavs and spurs are NBA teams, thus on the same level. i know that when times are tough for the rox, they will eventually bounce back. though UH and UT are both technically NCAA division 1 schools, they are nowhere near the same level. UH's once respectable program seems damaged beyond repair. i'm just trying to give others a chance to come on over to the burnt orange. ;)

When is it proper to quibble over semantics and when is it not?

    P.S.
I never got a response about the definition of threat in that thread.

your post was irrelevant and didn't warrant a response. I can't address every single poster who poses questions to me - not enough hours in the day.

Now maybe see if you can get ESPN, ABC, CBS, and all major news outlets and all other Universities (when typically posting their faculties degrees and such) to be sure to tack on that at Austin part. While you are at it why don’t you make sure they also not use the term “Americans” in favor of "Americans from neither Canada nor the nations of the Americans south of the United States of America” since you value specificity and officiality so much. Good luck with that.

The University of Texas is as synonymous with the University of Texas at Austin as Americans are synonymous with Americans from neither Canada nor the nations of the Americans south of the United States of America. Sure, you will always find a few people (typically from South American nations) quip with the use of Americans or American in this way, but pretty much everyone knows what they mean when they say Americans and America.

Like I said I never heard anyone in Texas, other Americans from neither Canada nor the nations of the Americans south of the United States of America, nor persons from nations not in the The United States of America nor those nonUSA persons outside of Canada and the Americas south of the United States of America get confused to the location referred to when they heard only the terms The University of Texas.

Well you don't get out enough. I hear it all the time in Houston talking to my friends who are going to medical school at UT-Houston. They simply say they go to "UT". Probably happens in other cities with branches of the UT system.

And when I worked in Mexico, I once had a discussion with several people at work about how idiotic it was to call people from the US "Americans", and not other people from the continents.

you're totally wrong. When people say they're going to Paris for the summer, i have to ask, "Which Paris?" then, for some reason, i get the  look. so i ask again, "which Paris?"

"Paris, France," they reply with a condescending look upon their face.

well, that's all you had to say. i mean, it could have been Paris, Texas.

who the **** would state excitingly that they are going to Paris, Texas??? That's like saying i'm stoked about going to London, Ontario. I would just say i'm going to Ontario instead.

i think you probably could understand what they were saying if you just listened to the context. i'm sure they weren't just saying it in a dull manner. usually people are excited to travel overseas...not excited to travel inter-state to a small town/city.

Actually, I see more Aggie shirts on campus. I saw a girl wearing a Moron Out shirt yesterday and I wanted to throw my soda at her so badly.

But I have to admit that I own a UT t-shirt, which I got at an engineering recruiting event. I use it to wash my car :D

I seriously want to ask them if they are getting a post grad degree at UH or if they are still in undergrad and they like that school so much why they aren't there?
