He is only 21 and skilled, if JVG can toughen him up we could have a sleeper here.

We'll be lucky if Lampe gives us a few good minutes of work each practice. No way he's back next year.

Not too far off from what you said about Yao Ming, nearly four years ago!

Ewing: Come on Yao, let's go practice your post moves.

Yao: Go train Lampe! I've gotta rest my toe.

    Moochie traded
The Rockets on Monday sent point guard Moochie Norris to the New Orleans/Okalahoma City Hornets for 6-11, third-year forward Maciej Lampe.

Lampe, chosen by the Knicks with the 30th pick in the 2003 draft when he unexpectedly slipped out of the first round, played in just two games this season. He was dealt to Phoenix as part of the Stephon Marbury- Antonio McDyess deal and traded to the Hornets last season with Casey Jacobsen for Jim Jackson. Lampe averaged 3.1 points and 2.4 rebounds for the Hornets and Suns last season.

The Rockets signed Norris out of the CBA in the 1999-2000 season, traded him to the Knicks for Clarence Weatherspoon last season, then reacquired him for Maurice Taylor. He averaged 2.2 points and 1.0 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 29 games with the Rockets.

"(Lampe is) a guy who moves his feet well," Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said. "He can play outside. He's got an outside shot and he's very active. He's not your basic post-up paint guy. He's good on high pick-and-roll, side pick-and-roll, a pick-and-pop guy and he's got some bulk to him."

The teams did not have to match salaries because the Hornets are under the salary cap. Depending on how the deal is structured, the Rockets could have $3.4 million to $4.2 million to use as a "trade exception" for up to a year from Monday.

I think JVG might have a use for him in his system. I believe him being in NYC and then the Suns and then with the hornets where their systems don't really utilize a big man or more or less coaches like byron scott who dont' like using a big man of size who can't run up and down the court like a gazelle.

Remember everyone thought Mutombo was washed up because Byron Scott never used him. Look how Deke is thriving in our system.

I'm not saying that Lampe will do the same but I think JVG will find a way to utilize him properly. At least I HOPE so. Otherwise yeah I hope another deal is in the works but I'm always the optimist.

i think the rockets have actually traded six fouls on the guard position for six fouls on the forward/center position. but i think lampe´s got a little more upside than moochie. hey and let´s not forget the trade exception... overall i think this is a good deal

Right, I wouldn't have forgotten about this. We actually have a couple of small exceptions from last year's deals that would be large enough to absorb Lampe's salary, allowing us to create a bigger (4.2 mill) exception good for a year.

Turning Moochie into a 4.2 mill trade exception is a fantastic move in and of itself. If Lampe's anything, it's gravy.

That was indeed a masterful move- I think we had some small exception that remained last year - not really sure. A 4.2 million exception is pretty much close to MLE and we have the MLE for next year- not bad for Mooch- it truly was passign of the guard for the Rockets- apart from Yao this time is JVG's by design!

Actually Lampe is worth keeping- would be great against the van Horn and Dirk type of players and if he is not atrocious I expect playing time for this dude- he is supposed to have 3 point range, but I never saw him play!

The remarks about Motumbo are encouraging. It looks like a good move if nothing else to keep rotating young players through till we get some keepers.

Can anyone think of a significant trade that we have made using trade exceptions? Mike James? Haven't we let several of these just wither away?

I'm also glad to see that Dawson made at least some obligatory positive remarks about Lamphe. If not, you know the trade was just about the exception.

    Moochie was a proven scrub.

When I first saw Lampe play as a 18 year old in the summer league after he was drafted by the Knicks, I was fairly certain that he would be a star in the league. He averaged over 10 ppg in that league as a 18-year-old rookie. He ran the floor really well and could shoot all the way to the three point line. He also had a good frame which would allow him to add muscle and eventually survive in the NBA paint.

However, my armchair GM status was soon exposed as Lampe never quite developed like I expected. For some reason he never got the playing time that he needed in NY. As someone mentioned, it probably had something to do with his attitude. Lampe was then traded to PHO and reportedly got into a fight with Amare Stoudamire. Soon he was traded again to the Hornets and that was the end of my hopes that he would ever be a star in the NBA.

I think that this is Lampe's last chance to stick in the league. If he doesn't make an impression with the Rockets, he would be out of the NBA next year. I still think that this guy has some natural talents and I hope that he will benefit from playing against a player like Yao Ming in practice. Although I no longer think that Lampe will ever be a star in the league, he could turn out to be a useful bench player for the Rockets.

Maybe you're right. But JVG's track record with Euros isn't encouraging.

    Boki? Good-bye.

In NYC, the Knicks wound up with Mirsad Turkcan, who believed a lot in his own abilities. He argued with Van Grumbles at practice: (paraphrasing)

"I am 3. Why am I not playing?"

JVG points at Larry Grammama (what was that player's name?) "Yeah, well, what about him?"

    "He no 3, he 4."

JVG to Turkcan: "You 3, me fired."

If we are bringing V-Span over, he is going to want close to MLE, but is obviously not worth full MLE. The problem is breaking up the MLE prevents you from getting a truly solid player.

Did I hear right that we would have to break up the MLE just to be able to sign him? If so, could we now use this trade exception to pay him his $2-3M and keep the MLE to use on a full MLE player?

So he's going to be our back-up small forward of the future?
