Today I worked out for the first time since last Summer. My legs (calves) are extremely sore, I can't even raise my big toes! My arms are sore also. I realize this is because I have not done any vigorous excersise in months but I plan to start doing so. I am going to start doing it 2 times a week and gradually increase up to 5 times a week. Is there any good rememdy for the pain I am feeling that any of you know of? A nurse told me I should go workout again tomorrow to take the pain away but I remember in health class from jr. high that you need to let your body rest and recuperate after workout, especially beginning after a long lay off. I warmed up before and walked around and wound down after but I still ended up sore, which I expected. So any advice for me on the pain or how to lessen it next time? Also, when working out is it better to workout first then eat or go workout a few hours after you eat?
ibuprofen.....some bodybuilder chick says it prevents the soreness. Also tons and tons of water with some stretching.
whoa, wait a minute... you're already sore? Wait till tomorrow, then we'll talk. No actually DO wait until tomorrow because it's so dang late, man.
better than starting twice a week and going up would be to do lighter weight regardless of number of days you're planning on working out. you can't pick up where you left off. i used to bench 150 regularly (light i know) then i quit for 2 years, when i started back up my max was 110, if i had tried to start with 150 i would have crushed myself. you've gotta stretch, and stretch often... also drink plenty of water. both, eating before will give you extra energy, and eating after will replenish what you've burned.
I find when I do legs I feel it the most 2 days later (often walking around like I have been raped ) Water consumption does help as well as walking in water (Heated pools) or having a spa. At least you know the muscles are working
Soreness typically sets in 24-48 hours after working out. Your next couple of days are going to be hellish. Sucks for you, brah
You'll be feeling much worse after you wake up. Seeing how you haven't lifted in a while, the Lactic Acid will probably build up quicker in your muscles and will make you feel like a dead weight. The best way to get rid of it is to do a light workout on the legs and arms, some cardio work, stretch, and drink plenty of water. From my experience, it's better to work out a couple of hours after you eat.
yo, bigtexx how much do you weigh? I bet I could out lift you. Pound for pound the greatest lifter on the BBS.
1) DO NOT stretch before a weight workout. Static stretching will tire the muscles out and your workout will not be as productive. 2) Stretch after your workout. 3) Do cardio the next day. This will pump blood through your muscles and alleviate much of the soreness.
After I lift I always do cardio. Jogging, biking, something to loosen the muscles up and get the blood flowing. I drink quite a bit of water, too. Haven't been sore in a long time now.
The extreme soreness is from the lack of working out and you probably pushing yourself too hard. After a long break sometimes your body doesn't seem tired at the time so you likely just went too hard. As for the pain try to score some vicodin if you can! As far as eating goes a banana and glass of milk would be good. and after meal Protein!
Not to hijack a thread but does anyone know of a good internet site that has info about working out, lifting (tips, different types of workouts for specific muscle types, good stretches before and after etc)? I recently started lifting and would like to read up on some pointers. Thanks.
Yeah, I actually have some good issues of that magazine, but unfortunately I left them back in my apartment and am out of the country right now. Thanks though.
Take some ibuprofen and keep working out but concentrate on a different body part for today (in other words, don't do chest 2 days in a row). I believe it is better to work out at least 2 and a half to 3 hours after you eat something.
