You do know that Paul Maguire also played linebacker in addition to his punting duties? Tirico is excellent, IMO - a little surprised that more people don't like him. Theismann is okay but like NJ Rocket, I can take him in doses. And I have my doubts about Kornheiser. I have this bad feeling that he is supposed to play the role of the agitator.
Hmm...Not sure if it'll be better, but it'll have to do...I'm not a JoeT fan, but Tony may be funny, although they tried the funny angle with Dennis Miller and it didn't work...
kornheiser is prima donna. listening to dan patrick's show they were talking about how he was the most difficult personality to work with at espn. does anyone remember when he was suspended from his radio show because he made some comments about managment on air when he thought the mike was off. the guy is a big baby. but he is funny.
I wonder if Tirico will still do Thursday Night College Football. If not, ESPN has screwed up IMO their best crew (Tirico, Herbie, and Corso).
My gosh... this BBS is one damn heterogenous group. In this thread alone, people either HATE, LOVE, or are INDIFFERENT to each and all of the following people: Tirico Thiessman McGwire Kornheiser Al Michales Mike Patrick John Madden Chris Berman (okay, nobody said they loved Chris Berman... but its just a matter of time till somebody fesses up). Thus, you guys all cancel each other's opinion out, and everything is just as it was before this thread ever existed...
I'm a huge fan of Kornheiser. He does the best radio show in the biz. And his "internet show" a few years ago on ESPN radio where they would leave the mic on during station breaks and allow their off-air comments to go over the internet stream was the greatest thing to hit radio since Orson Welles' War of the Worlds. Well he did know the mic was on. Like I said, they left the mic on at all times. He was just pissed because his producer got fired over some email scandal. And would voice his displeasure over it. Not to mention that he didn't have a good relationship with management because they didn't like how he would stray onto other topics besides sports. And other stuff like Kornheiser not booking athletes on his show. Of course this isn't exactly new in radio. A ton of radio personalities don't have good relationships with the "suits". Obviously Howard Stern comes to mind, and I'm sure there are hundreds of others, so I didn't think it was a big deal. Seriously, anybody that could have heard his "internet show" would be a fan of his forever. It was voyeuristic, and conspiratorial, honest and entertaining. And the humor was smart and witty, while still being very much "guy talk", and utterly relateable.
ESPN could have hired me for a fraction of what they are going to pay Kornheiser and I would do just as good a job. If anyone catches PTI all he and Wilbon do is scream and yell at one another while dropping in hardly any information or important commentary.
They need a BLACK DUDE! Chris Rock, Martin, Chris Tucker need someone in there to bring some "slang" to the game. "Oh, shiiieeeet is a boooomb!!! BOOOOYAAAA TOUCHTOWN HOUSTON!!!!!"
I actually liked the ESPN Sunday night crew, particularly Patrick. I think he's what made the Theisman-McGuire pairing tolerable. Wonder where'll he'll land.
Costas is working the "pre-game show" along with Cris Collingsworth. Micheals and Madden would be in the booth. No word on the sideline reporter. As for Mike Patrick, both him and McGuire are going to Saturday college football. Hopefully on ESPN 8, The Ocho!
Okay, I'm gonna be a hypocrite I know costas is highly rated but I'm not a fan of his game calling. When he did NBC's studio coverage back in the day though I thought he was excellent at that.
i'm with ya. i really like costas, but think he's best served in the studio. i like him more with baseball, frankly. i wish NBC still had baseball. frankly, i wish anyone other than Fox had baseball.
I've never had a problem with Theissman. He's not the most charismatic person, but is a decent x's and o's guy. I always got the impression that McGuire tried to compete knowledge-wise and would get frustrated. Korn-hole gets on my nerves. Tirico is ok. Now if Chris Berman was one of them, I might have to mute MNF. I can't stand that guys stale act. If he is talking, I try to find other things to listen to.
I'm sad to see Al Michaels leave Monday Night Football and go to NBC. I think he's a great announcer and one of the best in the business. I'm not too displeased with the ESPN MNF crew, although I'm a little weary of Tony Kornheiser. His shtick may be entertaining on PTI, but I don't know how this will translate to MNF. Why are so many people on this board unhappy with Mike Tirico? He's a pretty good broadcaster and the only one I could stand from the pregame NBA crew. I'm also glad Mike Breen will be doing the ABC NBA broadcasts with Hubie Brown. They should be great together.
