Iran’s biggest-selling newspaper has waded into the Muhammad controversy by launching a competition to find the 12 "best" cartoons about the Holocaust.
Farid Mortazavi, graphics editor for Tehran's Hamshahri newspaper, said that the deliberately inflammatory contest would test out how committed Europeans were to the concept freedom of expression.

"The Western papers printed these sacrilegious cartoons on the pretext of freedom of expression, so let’s see if they mean what they say and also print these Holocaust cartoons," he said....

Mr Mortazavi said that tomorrow's edition of the paper would invite cartoonists to enter the competition, with gold coins as prizes for the 12 winning artists -- the same number of cartoons that appeared in the conservative Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten lighting the touchpaper for fury which has swept around the Islamic world.

I saw the next comment on ?Jawa Report? and I thought I would share: What's so odd about this is that the Iranian dude actually makes a bit of a good point. In many European countries, Holocaust denial is a crime, something antithetical to the very principle we are trying to uphold here. How sad that such a pig would have to make that point....

***THIS IS AN ALL POINTS BULLETIN****

To display our outrage against these cartoons, I summon all men (no women) to the streets this evening for a night of angry chanting, jumping, flag burning, trampling of others, and unintelligible shouting.

childish yes, inflammatory, yes but at the very least perhaps a little cultural sensitivity would have prevented this.

The Islamic press frequently portray Jew as Nazis. I wonder when Muslim leaders and the Muslim "street" will condemn that.

When the response to the Holocaust cartoons is not worldwide violence and mass hysteria, what lesson can we learn from it?

I hope that they realise that the people of Denmark aren't particularly Jewish...

If they are hoping to offend the Danes by calling them a bunch of Nazis, they aren't taking into account the trend in Europe towards the Nazis which is called something like "learning through ugliness" or something like that, where shoving that sort of thing in your face, while not generally done as a cartoon, is nevertheless encouraged and considered a wise thing to do.

The Danish print cartoons about the Muslims & Islam, and the Iranians respond by printing cartoons about....The Holocaust??

If they really wanted to get the goat of the Danish, wouldn't they print cartoons about smoked salmon, or blondes with big t***?

The Iranians are a one trick anti-semitic pony. If freaking Martians printed cartoons about Muhammed, the Iranians would respond with cartoons about the Holocaust. And we Jews know it was Martians who were behind the Holocaust!

ok people, muslims do not enjoy bringing back the Holocaust, do not judge us by a few, given these are probably ones that do not practice the religion very well, but instead go on the "social norm" or what they may have "heard" from other people, not many people know this but there were about 1 million Muslims killed in the Holocaust, so trust me we have anger against it too, nowadays people are blind everywhere in the world, it's depressing

a few million, maybe. this is getting ridiculous. it's so sad that a country w/ so much damn potential to spread tolerance and democracy in the hell-hole that is the middle east is completely held capitve by it's fanatical (and clearly childish) leaders. how whack is one reiligion when so many of it's followers violently "misinterpret" it's teachings so often?

the sooner we reinstate foreing assasinations, the better.

The leader of Iran is truly a deranged man, I can't believe a country that was heading in the right direction under a moderate and progressive leader like Khatami could be turned almost overnight into a hateful and vindictive state.

Unbelievable what a difference leaders make. This guy is doing massive damage to his own nation, and the scary thing about it is that he doesn't seem to care, he seems to be almost rooting for a confrontation lately with some of his rhetoric.

I wouldn't be surprised if this guy is kicked to the curb sooner or later by the religious autocracy in Iran, even those guys can't be easy about the path he's taking Iran down to.
