tinman, I think you're exactly right that the Dems have taken black people for granted. But, again, it's not for nothing that they stick with the Dems even given that fact. This all has more to do with class than race, as does New Orleans. Not all blacks are poor (not even close), but they get poverty because they suffer it in much greater numbers than whites relative to their population. After all that blacks have been through in this country's history, even the ones that aren't poor are likely to have family or friends that are. And when one party ignores poor people and another does everything they can to unapologetically serve the rich -- unbelieveably, even when the poor are literally drowning in NOLA or dying in Iraq (make no mistake, a great number of our volunteer Army volunteered because they were too poor to pay for college) -- well, you can understand why someone might prefer the party that fails to represent them well to the one that actually refuses to respond to them losing their houses and dying. I think both parties suck at responding to poverty. I also think it's the most important issue facing our nation. The issue of poverty is also, more than anything else, why I'm a Democrat and is, more than anything else, why I'm disappointed in the Democratic Party. The Democrats have laid down on poverty and that sucks. But the Republicans have forsaken all else in favor of serving the rich and that sucks worse. If you're black and poor you'd be a fool to support the GOP. If you're black and not poor you very likely still understand poverty and, given that, it would be a real stretch to support a party that opposes affirmative action, an increase in the minimum wage, union organization or any other strategy to address poverty and discrimination other than telling people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. There will be more black Republicans when the Republican party makes an effort at addressing the number one issue facing black people in this country. When they do that it will be the first time. (It wouldn't hurt if they'd openly disdain the racists among them while they're at it, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon as they get more bang at the ballot box out of soft racism than they would out of opposing soft racists.) I think what NAACP chief Julian Bond said when he compared the GOP to Nazis was reprehensible, exactly like I think it's represhensible for Rove, et al (not to mention Jorge, basso and texxx) to call war opponents terrorist sympathizers (after all, it's the EXACT same offense), but I'm not surprised he said it. Kanye West was mostly right. He would have been exactly right if he'd said instead that Bush doesn't care about poor people. He doesn't. And that means a hell of a lot to a race of Americans that includes so many people that are poor.

well at least there's a chance for the poor to become rich or middle class. but thats a huge post. ultimately its down to that individual, how he was raised and how motivated he is to 'make it'.
i dont know who Jorge, basso and texx are. i mainly cross people over on the game threads.
new orleans had a bad poverty level. its much worse than what we see anywhere. i've always known that, anyone who's been to new orleans can tell u its the hood. but the hurricane showed the world how poor that area is.
i just want that region to be better, i'm sure it will rebuild. i like new orleans.

You don't know who basso, bigtexxx, and Trader_Jorge are? Seriously, tinman?? I know you like to say things tongue in cheek but if you are serious, you will find out who they are soon enough if you stick around in this forum.

not really manny,

i spend much of my time educating folks in the game forums,
telling them about the proud and great history of the Rockets.
as long as i still breathe,
HAKEEM
RUDY
OTIS
VERNON
SAM
KENNY
MARIO
CALVIN
KENNY
VERNON
CARL
BULLARD
GENE PETERSON
RALPH
will always be a topic on the board. some people in this city don't know what glory these great guys brought here.

Astros? Texans? nope ROCKETS.. the only CHAMPIONS here. they should never be disrepected no matter how many women Calvin sleeps with or how many women Vernon slapped.
What's so cool about StupidMoniker's post is he actually admits that's what's going on. I find that refreshing.
Of course I admit what's going on, it is common sense and plain as day for everyone to see, except I disagree that the Republican party screws minorities. I think the majority of people in both parties are interested in making this country better for it's citizens, they just have different ideas on the best way to do that. I have no problem with black people feeling that the Democrats' ideas serve them better and joining that party, but when they do, I don't think the Republicans shoudl have their lack of black candidates held against them, there are just so few to draw from, relativly speaking.

I just want to say I have enjoyed this discussion, and it is (almost ;)) always a pleasure reading your stuff in here.
Seems like you REALLY like Mad Max and the Jet.

DId you see that Michael Irvin got dissed for the football hall of fame?
he got the Vernon Maxwell treatment. they got no love for THUG LIFE there. I hate politics. people should know the difference between achievements and personal life. So what if they didnt have a perfect personal life, their successes in their career should not be ignored.

Ok back to this stuff. I vote democrat and republican, it depends on the INDIVIDUAL who im voting on. Look I hate the Spurs, but I'd dump Stromile for Tim Duncan any day of the week. Im not going to blindly hate a whole group of people, even though most Spurs fans are inferior to Rockets fans. They got some good fans there, same here, there's some wack Rocket fans.

If Black people want to go Republican, don't hate on them. Its their choice, respect it. at least they are doing something in politics to change the world.

When I go to the Rockets games and see a Laker fan, I dont go out and disrespect them, I'll boo and diss the Laker team, but never the fan. Some of you out there on any freaking issue want to start some Ron Artest melee. Chill.

tinman,

I know I have ragged on your posts before in other forums for being too far-out-there and inane...but this D&D side of you is refreshing.

Im shocked to say I agree with quite a bit of your viewpoints expressed after the initial post.

carry on

It's not unlike somebody saying they think affirmative action is wrong and that race should not be a plus factor ... but then turning around and saying somebody would be a good president because she is black and female.

Yes and no.

I see the similarity but many want her to run not ONLY because she's black and female but because they think she's qualified for the job.

I agree with most everythingyou said. I did want to point out that the primary person who rails against video games is none other than Hillary Clinton.

I agree. Parents should restrict the listening habits of their spawn. Not the government.
Again I agree. It's up to parents.

I disagree here, personally but it is too touchy. I certainly don't want stuffy old men deciding what is right or wrong. I think kids should be raised with stricter morals and standards.
I'm going with the constitution here.

Include qualified people. Irrespective of color.

??? that's just stupid.
Foolish crap from you.

Gays throw great parties.

Agreed. So have a lot of stuffy old republican geezers.

And I am a proud Republican.

Not that there is anything wrong with that ;)

I am a proud conservative on most issues, can be liberal on others.
