My favorite sport of the year started this week! Yes, it's college baseball season! My Rice Owls are preseason top 5 in most polls, despite have a very young team made up mostly of sophomores. They open the season tomorrow against a Central Missouri State team that went 57-9 last season and is ranked as the #2 DII team in the country. Then on Tuesday there is a battle versus an always respectable McNeese State team. The real excitement begins next weekend as the Minute Maid tournament takes place downtown. Rice will face Texas Tech, UT-Austin and TCU on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I know there are a lot of UT-Austin fans on here, so just to give you a quick update, they opened the season today and lost to the University of San Diego Toreros, 4-2.
AH! DAMN, THERE GOES OUR SEASON! We never should've tired ourselves out winning all those national titles so we could beat our arch nemesis and national championship contenders the University of San Diego Toreros.
Well, I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. That's what's great about college baseball - you get a couple of clutch hits and a hot pitcher, and you can beat anybody.
Great time of year. If I can get a hall pass, I'll be out there with bigtexxx tomorrow. Come find me, buddy.
Yep just like when Texas Southern beat Rice. BWHAHAHAH!!!! Texas Southern would struggle in a Little League tournament.
I'm gonna try to make it to UH-UT next Friday night, and maybe Rice-UT on Saturday. $12 bucks general admission for good college matchups at MMP? Sounds good
I actually don't care for the college baseball atmosphere at Minute Maid. The fact that most of the stadium is empty really takes away from the experience, in my opinion. Give me a sunny day at Reckling or (gasp!) even a nice day at Cougar Field with sold out attendance over more fans, yet an empty stadium at MM.
I wish the college series would be over sooner so that they could clean the baseball mess and fix up my soccer field for my team America vs. Portmore United of Jamaica. jk Hey, does Rice give free baseball tickets for my family just like they gave me free men's and women's basketball tickets?
texas is a deserving preseason #1, if you doubt that just check the stats. 2 national championships in the last 5 years, 5 CWS appearances in the last 5 years, it's obvious they deserve their spot. regardless, my texas state bobcats lost a tought one today to Oklahoma 7-6, despite getting up 6-2. it was a tough loss, but we are going to be good this year, i expect us to contend for a conference championship and a NCAA appearance. i think the team will rally and get this one for ty harrington, if anyone knows anything about the TSU program knows about his personal loss this offseason, and after interviewing the guy after his first day of practice about a week ago, i hope this team goes far for him. go bobcats!!
Not free, but they'll have some family promotions throughout the year. Check their website for more info. Rice typically is in the top 10 in terms of baseball attendance in the country. We average around 3,000 per game, which is remarkable considering that there are only 2800 undergrads at Rice.
I will be kicking off the college baseball season on 02/10/06 @ Minute Maid. Go Coogs! 2006 College Classic
The Rice Owls put a HURTING on the Central Missouri State Mules this afternoon. Final score was 9-0, Rice!! Aaron Luna, a freshman from Southlake Carroll high school near Dallas, had two at bats on the day and yanked two home runs. He has now vaulted himself into the frontrunner's spot as freshman player of the year. Joe Savery, another Rice Owl won the award last season from Baseball America.
Looks like the San Diego Toreros just shut out UT-Austin, 6-0, to beat them again. Horns start off 0-2 on the year. Rice might vault them to take the #1 spot in a few of the polls if Rice keeps winning.
Polls are completely worthless. By the end of the season, we'll host a super regional (or whatever the playoffs are called).
Call it arrogance or whatever. I doubt any UT baseball supporters care about the polls , the regionals (or whatever they're called). We've been to the college World series 5 years in a row? with 2 national championships in 4 years? We're one of the best programs in college baseball history. We'll care in Omaha.
I don't deny that UT-Austin has a strong baseball history. Of course people care about polls, though. Go read hornfans if you haven't already.
