RC, you are the resident gaming guru here. I hope you can help me. Well, i'll gladly welcome help from anyone.

Here's the problem. All of a sudden my PS2 will not read any silver colored discs. It only reads games that are blue or black underneath. i only have one game (and that's just a demo) that is blue and the black ones are all PS1 games. So, now I can't play Madden, MVP baseball, GTA:SA and several others.

i've already tried doing what was suggested in the following link:

    disc read error

still nothing. the thing is when i put in the games, i don't even get a "disc read error." it just goes straight to the system configuration screen.

my system is one of the older models, 30001, so you'll probably just tell me what i don't want to here...buy a new one.

My PS2 sometimes gets finicky about reading discs, too. I can tell you that running a DVD cleaner disc through the system seemed to help the problem a lot. But PS2's aren't exactly known for their stellar reliability.

Macalu- Have you tried taking the PS2 apart and cleaning the disk reader with alcohol and a q-tip? A buddy of mine did it to his and another friend's and it works perfectly. I don't know how to exactly do it but I think he found out how to do it online.

I wouldn't worry about the warranty void since it's void anyways by now.

Get outta here... you called the manufacturer of a product that is failing for possible repair options? That's so weird!

I don't have much experience fixing PS2's since mine really doesn't have any problems. I only have links to offer like this one:
    http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/ps2_disc_read_error_a.txt

I did have a problem somewhat recently where my PS2 didn't seem to want to play CD-based games (can't remember if it was just PS2 CDs or all CDs), but after reading that, I did the "rotating the system" method. I didn't think it would work, but I moved it from the horizontal to the vertical position and all of a sudden, all my games worked again. Strange thing was that I could even put it back to the horizontal position once the game started and it ran fine.

So check out that guide and some other ones, not to mention any advice from other BBS members here and hopefully you'll fine a solution. As mentioned, you could also call up Sony and see if they'll fix it for you. Hopefully getting a new one would be a last resort, but at least a price cut seems to be in the near future. :)

You have to ship it to Sony. I did it twice and they fixed it for free, I just had to pay for shipping, they said they would reimburse me but I really didn't care since it was like receiving a new PS2.

But I think they have stopped doing it for free. That same friend called Sony and they said they would fix it for $70. You could email them and see what they say.

I was getting a disk read on the blue disks. The ps2 was rattling as it tried to read the disk. I took the sucker apart and saw that there is a white plastic "thingamabob" that sits on the cd while it's in the tray. It was worn out pretty bad, so I tore apart an old ps2 that I had laying around (my brothers...he won't repair, he'll buy new) and replaced it a voila'! Works like new.
