Though I am not of Asian persuasion tomorrow night will be the eve of the Chinese New Year which falls on January 29th 2006. This will be the Year of the Dog and will be year 4703 according to tradition.

What are some of our Asian brethren doing to celebrate in Houston and elsewhere?

Oh, and Happy New Year in advance!

In China, Chinese NY is a week long celebration. This does not apply to HK however.

man, the only thing i hate about minute maid park and the toyota center is that it basically blocked out Chinatown in east downtown.

i remember going to Kim Hung Supermarket and stuff.

I'm in North Carolina and I'm taking my girls (4 and 6) to the Cultural Arts Center downtown where they are hosting a celebration. I took my two older kids a decade or more ago and had a good time: food, dance, music, and Dragon Line-dancing...

Dragon Line-dancing? Is that the one where the Dragons put on their boots and get down on some country music.

It's the start of the Islamic new year as well; both follow the lunar calender.

Had a little Chinese New Year get together at my place on Sat. Its kind of a local tradition for me to have a Chinese New Year's get together which used to get out of hand but thankfully have been getting tamer. These parties used to feature tacky Hong Kong movies, burning architectural models and people accidentally falling or deliberately being thrown (nothing like a rowdy martial arts party.)

We played Mah Jong and then went to a restaurant that does cuisine from Chongqing. None of the staff spoke much English, so my sister-in-law mediated for everyone.
