    Some info about it:

    Nintendo DS Lite
    Release Date: 2006-03-02
    Price: 16800 Yen
Feature: 4 adjustable levels of brightness (ala PSP), thus the name "Lite"
    Old Size: 149 x 85 x 29 = 275g
    New Size: 133 x 74 x 22 = 218g

Still don't see why the did one so early, especially with the sales it has been getting. A funny thing was that a Nintendo of Europe exec was interviewed earlier yesterday, and he said he knew nothing about a redesign. :)

It's obviously going for the same style ques as the Revolution controller, so I would assume that's the main reason for the redesign.

I think they are following the iPod's footsteps as well. They'll probably do some studies to see how many customers end up buying one of these even though they have the old one and the shortages, IE cutting back of production, insures that there is a good number of people out there who are still trying to get a DS and will have to buy the new one. I hope they go with multiple colors at the release date and I hope they don't shy away from making a black one just because the PSP is black.

I assumed they would do redesign, and the design itself is fine by me, but I just don't understand why they're doing it right now. Just seems too early to me, something they could have used later on once the DS sales slowed down a bit. Once thing I didn't think about that might have influenced the decision may have been any sort of manufacturing costs that went down thanks to the redesign, but I can't imagine they were that significant to warrant a redesign so soon (especially since some things were improved and may have cost more).

As for different colors, I'm sure they'll do that, although again, I would think they could wait on doing that, like they did with the regular DS IIRC. Offer a white one (or whatever color they pick as the "original"), then a few months later, offer a blue one, a pink one, a red one, a black one, etc.

i just bought a ds on monday and i love it. the redesign isnt upsetting seeing as how there isnt much wrong with the current one. i think nintendo just wanted to get it out before the release of the next gen gameboy which may take place a year or so after the revolution. that is just speculation by me, i have no proof. but nintendo(apple) has been looking pretty sleek with their new stuff :D

Can't tell from the picture if the redesigned unit addresses the critism of DS being rough around the edges -- caused, IMHO (or perhaps this was mentioned in various articles, but I'm just thinking I'm the first to observe this), mainly by the fact that the DS doesn't seem to shut close tightly (the edges don't come together), but rather hangs loose a bit. If they address that problem, I can see a new DS Lite in my immediate future.

This is exactly what I've been waiting for. I like the DS now... but think it's too bulky... if this ismore pocket friendly I'll prolly jump on it...

That's exactly how I feel. I didn't like how it doesn't really close competely (the ends on the touch screen slope), the buttons seemed a little cheap looking and the button layout wasn't exactly comfortable. If they fix some of these things, I might be sold. But then again, I'd almost rather spend less on those micros. I fell in love with the Famicom version.

My son has a DS, which his younger sister probably uses more than he does (they're 10 and 14), so I'm a bit familiar with them. Besides the "lite" adjustment, what's so different? Looks pretty much the same to me. Did they bump up the CPU or anything?

Not really much difference. Kind of like the PStwo and some of the other Nintendo handheld redesigns, this is just basically for looks with some minor improvements from what I could tell. Although I will say I read something about some rumors about some extra flash memory I believe that could hold some game demos. I haven't had time to dig deep into these rumors and other info on the DS Lite yet.
