Q: Erick Dampier or Stromile Swift?

    Johanna Hankins

SEFKO: Why do I get all the tough questions, and D-Moore takes all the fat pitches like, “Should Dirk be an MVP contender?’’

I guess if I had a beer in front of me and you wouldn’t let me drink it until I picked one, I’d lean toward Swift just because his contract is about $40 million less than Dampier’s.

That said, I think Dampier is a better player. Neither of them is going to blow you away with their outward passion. In fact, there is a running joke in Houston that goes something like this:

“It’s a good thing Stromile wasn’t in the Wizard of Oz because he’d have the ultimate dilemma – whether to ask for a heart or a brain.’’

Dumpier sucks and is already regressing. In his final year, at 35-years of age the Mavs will be paying him over $13 M. That's an albatross, franchise destroying on any other ball club that doesn't have the luxury of a $100 M payroll.

All true but it's not like the Mavs haven't ever overpaid for border line talent before

Dampier runs his mouth, get a big fat check, and does jack-doodle-sh*t on the floor... not to mention he's getting old.

Stromile is cheap, not a punk, and is still very young and has time/room to grow.

(Stewie's voice) Wait a minute I have one.

Some people you have to pay to be good, but Stromile is just good for NOTHING! :D

Sorry, was that in poor taste?

When does SS run out of 'time/room to grow'? And which team/coach will he be with when he does grfow into his paws -- or the clock runs out?

It will in time but unless someone gives him a massive contract will it really matter? He'll just become another PF in the league getting mid level money

Of course they have and that's part of my point. With such an enormous payroll, a mistake like Dumpier can be absorbed without completely hamstringing the franchise for years the way it would for other teams.

This is all kind of funny considering the deal Phoenix signed Steve Nash to wasn't really that much bigger than the deal they ended up offering to Dumpier.

    Steve Nash

    05-06 $9,625,000
    06-07 $10,500,000
    07-08 $11,375,000
    08-09 $12,250,000
    09-10 $13,125,000 (Team Option)

    Erick Dampier

    05-06 $7,662,500
    06-07 $8,625,000
    07-08 $8,587,500
    08-09 $9,550,000
    09-10 $10,112,500
    10-11 $13,075,000

That's my point they seem to spend money on low level talent but let quality players, ala Nash, go for the same price..

Makes no sense but I'll be laughing my butt off once Cuban paints himself into a corner he can't get out of

He started playing pretty well before he got hurt. Let's see how he plays when he comes back before we write him off.

This is a good time for someone to post that pic of Dirk drunk at the party.

Are you guys kidding? Dampier is the best center in the league. At least he was in the playoffs last year. ;)

Cuban has a fantasy GM tendency to take his current team status for granted when making big moves.

He thought he needed a big man only and underestimated an aging Nash.

Yes...and IIRC he was IL'd by Cronk ere he went to the northen pasture known as Dullandless.

Now, back to ES's reported joke...

Actually, I believe Sefko decided he wanted to cover golf for a while, which he did for the Chronicle. After a couple years he got the itch to cover the NBA again, but of course the Chron already had beat writers in place so he took a job with the DMN.

    But, uh, anyway
