ATI recently launched their newest top-of-the-line cards, the Radeon X1900 XT and the X1900 XTX (as well as a AIW variant). Here's their press release:
    http://ir.ati.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=105421&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=807679&highlight=

There are tons of reviews out there already, which you may be able to find on your own, but here's one to start on:
    http://www.beyond3d.com/reviews/ati/r580/

As usual, it is a beast and can ran the most demanding games at max settings without really breaking a sweat. The XTX costs like $650 while the XT costs $550; I've read that the XT actually comes quite close to the XTX in a lot of benchmarks, so it may actually be the better card to get since it is comparable and $100 cheaper.

Speaking of cheaper cards, here's some of ATI's new suggested prices for the rest of the cards (from the B3D review):
edit: Crap, hit submit on accident. Hold on while I get the rest posted; you got enough material anyway for the moment.

edit for CPU part of post:

CNET did a comparison of some of the dual-core Intel and AMD CPUs. Check out the story here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10442_7-6389077-1.html?tag=lnav
Probably not too surprising, but still interesting to read.

edit2: fixed the price chart. Man, I was NOT ready for this thread to be submitted. Sorry about all that.

Right on man. I'm expecting 2 samples of the X1900 any day now for reliability evaluation. This card is supposed to seriously haul ass. I'll probably try Halo 2 on an XPS box.

Man... Intel was wiped in that comparison... not a surprise really, Intel has been inferior for a while now.
I wonder if AMD will ever be able to take advantage of their superior performance in the marketplace. I know they have had higher sales but I think they're pretty much topped out as far as their ability to put cpu's in boxes.
Athlon 64 won't be king forever... Tick Tock AMD

Aren't there rumors that Dell will soon be supporting AMD? I haven't been following them that closely, but that could help out AMD a lot.

AMD would be a much more serious contenda if they land Dell, but I don't think that could happen until Fab 36 comes online later this year.

Wow, are all of those better than my 9800 Pro at 128 bits? Because under 200 bucks, I think it's time I upgrade. I'll have to research this later.

True. I think those rumors have been around for a little while now, and still no deal yet. Might not be until later in the year, as you said...assuming it even happens.

Well, all of those (except for the X300 I think) support SM3.0, so that sort of makes them better by default in a way. I'd also have to look at the benchmarks/specs to get an idea of how much better they are than your 9800 (X1300 might not be much better, if at all), but a lot of these low-to-mid range cards from ATI and Nvidia are pretty nice for their price.

All these new cards are very likely to be PCI-E so you will have to upgrade your motherboard and cpu to upgrade from your 9800PRO

I'm almost positive there were no PCI-E 9800PRO's so I'm just assuming you don't have a PCI-E board.
Even if they do make a AGP board, it will sell for a premium.

You could get a Geforce 6800 but it's not a huge upgrade in performance.

Oh yeah, good point about the AGP/PCI-E thing. I always tend to forget that part.

Also, if you were considering one of these new cards, you might also consider going for one card for now and then getting the same card again later on (at a cheaper price) and using it with the 1st one via Crossfire (or SLI if you're looking at Nvidia). Just another thing to look into.

All new cards under development are PCI-E. AGP is dead.

I know mine isn't AGP. I looked at ATI's site and see that is describes all 9800's as "AGP based", but the first time I cracked my PC open was when I was installing a new ethernet card after the intergrated one died on me. The fan on the video card was getting in the way of installing the ethernet card, so I removed the data fax modem since I don't use dial up and moved the video card into that slot. So mine is definately PCI, but I guess all new cards are PCI-E only. When did PCI-E get introduced?

I'll have to look at it again when I get home.

It has been around for a few years I think. I think around maybe 2004 was when some of the graphics cards went PCI-E.

The 6800 GS is a great value at less than 200 and some are AGP based.

I'm thinking of putting together a "dream system," with
triple-head video most of the time (mostly for additional desktop real estate) but able to handle the good games too.

Recommendations, anyone? Dual X1900's? Dual 7800's?
    Parhelia?

Dual 7800s is a ridiculously fast setup and will give you all the graphics power you'll ever need. It's a very expensive setup though, and will set you back a few bucks. A single 7800 will work just fine for your purposes.

    How about quad 7800's? :)

BTW, the new Nvida part (basically a response to the x1900) should be announced in a month or 2. Rumored to be around March I believe (at CeBit).

It won't handle three monitors, will it?
