Decent chance of the BlackBerry getting shut down unless it shells out some major cash http://money.cnn.com/2006/01/23/technology/rim/index.htm?cnn=yes
Doesn’t matter anyway.. BlackBerry is trying to delay the inevitable.. They will die a slow and painful death because of the competition from Pocket PC phones, just like Palm is doing right now with Windows based PDAs.. It's only a matter of time..
Well, considering that the US Government may delay the closure of the BlackBerry network by up to two years even if ordered to close down my mean the longevity of BlackBerries. The BlackBerry is so intertwined with US Government employees that closing down the network all together is not an option, and won't happen anytime soon. This battle will continue to roll on...
Its just some analysts opinion. I've been following this story on TV also, sometimes they say "some analysts predict Balckberry will shut down" other times they say "some analysts say it wont". It depends on who's doing the story.
According to WSJ, the Chairman and co-CEO of RIM was the one who originally said they have some sort of software workaround. http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB113745806277048048.html?mod=todays_free_feature
Exactly, how can you analyze the company and say that they have a way to get around it when there have been no details yet. I'm sure Enron said the same thing about getting around that annoying "cooked books" problem.
Blackberry has had years to prepare for a workaround, and considering that they are by and far the leader in the market they have the funding to research and plan just that. To think they are going to give secrets as to where the company is moving forward technologically would be silly... especially considering that moving to a new technology isn't a given yet, it still may not be required.
Hasnt the last few years taught you anyhting about putting your faith in big corporations or the words that come out of their CEOs?
RIM is a proven company, you can't compare the words of their COE's with inflated trading numbers... See how I write a check for Blackberries for 28 grand a month for my company of 300 people I know they have a corner on the market and arent' going anywhere for a while... and anyone who has read up on the US government's involvement with the Blackberry case is well aware that the Government couldn't function without Blackberries so they aren't going anywhere. RIM is also a Canadian company so that gives them another edge when dealing with US courts. Large corporations (especially technology based) and infringement cases go hand and hand, and when MS was first charged people saw it as "the end of Microsoft" but their extreme wealth and firm grip on the market drew the preceedings out over nearly a decade and their settlements were far from significant hits to their bottom lines. Technology companies have a much easier time dancing around this issue then brick and mortor type places... Blackberry isn't going anywhere.
As I pointed out in my earlier post, it all depends on what "analyst" the reporter is talking to. here is a follow up article on the issue. http://money.cnn.com/2006/01/24/technology/blackberry/index.htm
this crap has been going on forever. doubt anything will get shut down. but i hope it does. my boss uses blackberry, i use treo. our crappy out dated email server wont work with the treo, but it will with blackberry. no blackberry = new email server.
