I never said Democrats weren't guilty of influence peddling as well. They are, and it's been going on as long as the Republic, I guess. The GOP has taken it to an entirely new level, however. Every so often, we need a big shakeup and a major shift in power. Too often, a big scandal is what spurs that on. It's happened to Democrats and to Republicans in the past. It's happening right now. Neither party has clean hands, but if Democrats in Congress have mud up to their elbows, the Republicans are literally drowning in it. I absolutely agree on the lack of Democratic leadership. It's appalling, and the biggest problem Democrats face. I hope a charismatic leader, with good ideas and the ability to articulate them in a way that resonates with the public, comes forward from somewhere. It's desperately needed. Keep D&D Civil.
So far the Republicans are wrong. There are no Democratic politicians that have accepted money from Abramoff or his organizations, last I checked. I've been looking for evidence that they are guilty as well, but it just hasn't surfaced yet. Democrats have taken money from Indian tribes, and Indian gaming groups, but they have not taken any money from Abramoff affiliates.
As long as we have the current structure for electing a President and the majority control system of Congress it will almost be impossible for a successful third party. The only chance that I see for a third party is to capture a governorship here and there and build from there. It may be possible for a charismatic third party candidate to win the Presidency but it will be unlikely for them to build up a power base enough to control the Congress quickly and will probably be severely handicapped in their governance. (not necessarily a bad thing.) For quite awhile its going to be Republican or Democrat. I'm not a huge fan of either party but there are big ideological differences between them that translate into policy. Anyone who doesn't think so just consider if Kerry had been in office whether Roberts or Alito would be nominated to the USSC. I believe the best route is still divided government is what we need where no one party can control all three sections of elected government.
What are you doing about this to change it? This is how were different from the Soviet Union. We have the freedom to make a difference.
Well lets see, I still actually vote. Since 1992 I have been voting Democratic in national elections because that is the party that most closely fits my views. I've sent a letter to Senantor Feingold begging him to run for the presidency in 2008. I think I'll avoid going so far as trying to make a Timothy McVeigh difference.
